need some help with recommendations

Considering a decent box of ammo will cost you 1/3 that amount alone, I would have to say nooooo to your original query.............

338 Lapua

If you add a zero to your price so it looks like $6000, I would look for a 338 Win mag if your looking to spending $600, just the reloading components will run you over your price range for 338 Lapua.

You just missed a VERY VERY good deal from The Lorax for a 338 Lapua Magnum.

It was a AI with tonnes of extras, he was asking $5600 no scope and reloading componants were extra.

There are 2 on there right now one is $7300 and the other is i belive $8050

The 338 Lapua is a long range percission caliber, not your everyday run of the mill hunting caliber. so Everything is going to be based towards percission shooting.

The PWG's in 338 Lapua will probably end up being somewere in the $5500-6000

Were you thinking 338WM? that is doable without optics

ok then I think I will have to start with something else LOL

I want to get into something accurate at 600-1000m , Any suggestions in that under 600 range

I know these are my best best
7.62x51mm (.308 Winchester) 800–1,000 m
7.62x54mm R 800–1,000 m
7 mm Remington Magnum 900–1,100 m
.300 Winchester Magnum 900–1,200 m

7.62x54R for 800-1000?

What are you really looking to do? F-class? Just for fun? If you are on a budget I would get a .223 with a fast twist barrel 1-8" at minimum for the 80gr bullets.

If you want accuracy at long range, save your money and get something decent at first, not to mention you will NEVER get an accurate rifle WITH decent optics for under $600.

Honestly not trying to be rude here, you have $600 already save another $1400. When you have about $2000 come back and ask the same question but with the new figure. Then you can set yourself up with a very nice rig with a good scope included. Just off the top of my head Milarm has a Remington 700P .338 Lapua for about $1400 add a Vortex, Bushnell, Millet, or Falcon scope and your in business. Or a Remington 300RUM Sendero for the same price just cheaper to shoot. Just don't waste you $600 bucks on a peice of crap, you will regret it.

I get this alot in here. I want to go to the range and fire off some long distancce shots and putter around. I dont want to spend a pile of money. Same reason I'm buying an sks instead of an Ar15. Many WW2 snipers used rifles I can buy for 300 bucks and hit things at over 500m. I just want to know if theres rifles out there that can hit targets 600-1000m and not cost me a pile of money. This 600 bucks doesnt include the optics. just the rifle

Actually your list overlooks many better shooting long-range cartridges. Lots of good 6 mm choices out there that won't break the bank. Search the precision rifles forum and read some of mysticplayer's informative posts.

I got these numbers off wiki
Accuracy and Range also depends on the cartridge used:

Cartridge Maximum effective range[12]
5.56x45mm 300–500 m
7.62x51mm (.308 Winchester) 800–1,000 m
7.62x54mm R 800–1,000 m
7 mm Remington Magnum 900–1,100 m
.300 Winchester Magnum 900–1,200 m
.338 Lapua Magnum 1,300–1,600 m
.50 BMG (12.7x99mm NATO)
12.7x108mm (Russian) 1,500–2,000 m
14.5x114mm 1,900–2,300 m
.408 Chey Tac > 2,400 m

are they wrong?

No they're not wrong - but they're not completely right either! There are a number of contributors on this forum with lots of real world experience. Wikipedia is created from general information. You may want to profit from the experience of the contributors to this forum. There are rifle/cartridge combos that can reach out without burning a great whole in your pocket. You can use the search function to review some of these discussions.

You will probably benefit by opting for a lighter recoiling cartridge until you hone your shooting skill. As has been mentioned a 223 with a tight twist(1in8)
You'll find with longer and correspondingly heavier bullets this will easily exceed the 3-500 expectation on Wikipedia!

Cheers

Nope.

Some claim that the Remington 700P will return to the Canadian market new.

Might get one used for $1200-$1400 ish used.

:D:D:D:D:D

I just bought one for 750$ with a bushnell 4200 and leupold rings/mount

I'll make a thread and whore some pictures of her later.
:welcome:

If you are looking to get a start in longer range shooting for minimal cost I would look into either a lower end heavy barrel remington or savage. Both can be had for around $600 NIB and then upgraded later should you decide you want to.

For optics I would look at a Bushnell elite 3200 10x or a falcon menace in whatever flavor you like.

As for caliber .308 is good, but a .223 with a faster twist (1-9 or 1-8) would be cheaper to shoot and easier on the shoulder. Either of those should get you to 1000 yards no problem and can be had in factory heavy barrel rifles (ie no barrel change out required).
