RCMP Phone interview

I never got a call, but I've just been renewing for years. Maybe you get the call if you're a first time applicant. I've been called as a PAL/RPAL reference several times.

I got called when I applied for my RPAL. They wanted to know why I wanted one and went through all the questions on the form.

Ya, me too, for the RPAL upgrade. They called me first. Re-asked the questions on application. Then called references same day. sounds like SOP.

I never got a call from the CFC, but then again, I upgraded from a POL to a PAL/RPAL in 2006. I've owned both restricted and non-restricted since the mid 80's. They probably figured - what difference does it make. Maybe its a new thing........I did have to complete the same application and provide references who were never contacted. I do remember that I had to go through the "show and tell", "chat" and "what do you need that for" with the local firearms officer each time I bought a restricted back in the old FAC days. What a PITA that was. IMO, its much easier now. Hmmmmmm.

It seems to be a bit of a nightmare over at the CFC right now. One of the client service representatives informed me that we could be looking at three weeks from mail arrival until the info is entered into the system. I had to re-submit a reference for my RPAL and it has been over a week since they received the mail but the info has not been amended to my application. I was told it will be another week at least!???

They are calling and interviewing on all RPALs it seems. When I asked if they could contact my reference even though they only had a copy of his signature on my application, I was informed that "You are applying for an RPAL!!" A fax of his signature is not LEGAL! This is a LEGAL document!"

Why doesn't the CFC just call him and ask "Hey did you sign this document?"

But that would make too much sense.

.........to solve the high unemployment in the eastern provinces.

A fax of his signature is not LEGAL! This is a LEGAL document!"

Hmmmmm..............boy, have I got news for the CFC! Unless, you need the document notorized, of course, which you don't.

Interesting. I get faxed legal documents all the time. I sign them and fax them back. Maybe a fax of a fax is a legal document?
This just the government's way of making life difficult for restricted gun owners. They may be starting to realize that it is actually easier to buy a handgun now than it was before C-68. I read somewhere that handguns in Canada are more popular than ever and a growing sector of the handgun community. The RCMP used to have an iron grip on who owned handguns and who didn't in Canada. They lost that with the formation of the CFC/ It looks like they are trying to get it back.

The fact that we as a society put up with government employees calling us and asking us about our relationships and personal mental health (very subjective at best) so we can get a license to buy a firearm to is startling to me.

WTF? Welcome to :canadaFlag:. Home of the ridiculous and land of untold waste.

Upgraded my PAL to an RPAL and both my references were called and I was called also.
Very polite "interviewer" asked why I wanted to obtain restricted firearms and then went over a number of questions from the application. Also asked how long I had known my references.
One of my references suggested to me that it was a waste of time calling her as why would I put down a reference unless I knew that she would only say nice things about me. Good point. She was asked if she was threatened in any way to give a good refererence. Well, other than that I'm her boss and pay her very well ...... :D
All in all, not a painful experience.

All in all, not a painful experience.

WOW!

The police ask you why you want to own something and you are OK with that?

The police call people you know and ask if it's OK with them if you own legal property? Your OK with this?

This entire system is a mockery and a outrage. We should all be, literally, enraged by such a controlling, wasteful and outrageous system.

People, THE GOVERNMENT IS ASKING YOU ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIPS AND CALLING PEOPLE YOU KNOW BEFORE "LETTING" YOU BUY LEGAL PROPERTY.

WHY ARE WE NOT FREAKING OUT? (K, I'm freaking out, but why are some OK with this total BULL$HIT!) :bangHead: :bangHead: :bangHead: :bangHead: :bangHead: :bangHead:

Now, don't get me wrong.
I didn't say that I felt it was a needed exercise, or that I necessarily agree with the system, but it IS the law that we have to live with and deal with and if I want to get the RPAL, I have to comply with the law as it is written.
I guess you would've been happier if I had torn the interviewer a new butt, ranted and raved and then not got the RPAL.
I would prefer to vent my concerns and frustrations in the political arena which is the only place that change will occur.
