We all know and hate how the FN FAL is a prohib. But what about new manufacture receivers? Is the FAL in the same boat as "real" M14's? Since the Norinco/Poly M14s is built on a new receiver which is Semi-auto they are not prohibited, if someone made new, semi-auto only receivers for the FAL would they still be prohib? The FAL is just such pretty rifle, I really want one (like all of us)

Still prohib. DSA in the US bought all the Austrian machinery and produces brand new semi-only hard to convert with no auto sear slot receivers. Un-exportable, and would be declared a "variant" if they were somehow to get here.

The thing to remember is that all prohibs were listed by name when the OICs came out. Some had "and any variant..." added to their description. So for example, under FN FAL it lists all the FN model numbers, L1A1 and any comercial model (Springfield Armoury had a couple), and "any variant".

The reason we can buy Swiss Arms, CZ-858, M14s/M305 is because they were not being manufactured or imported when the OICs were issued, so they do not appear on "the list".

Anything that is on the list is verboten, and any "new" production of the same design is still prohib. For example, there is now a US produced semi auto version of the Styer AUG, and the H&K-91 (different names, new machinery etc), but they would still be "variants". In fact there is a .22 rimfire MP-5 look-alike that is currently working its way through the courts, prohib as a ""variant" despite being a blowback .22 rimfire. There is also a .22 AK looking rimfire rifle that is prohib as a "variant" of the AK.

Actually the GSG-5 case was won but has been appealed by the crown.

i would love to be able to have a legal semi version of these. I shot a real one about 15 years ago and man was it great.

off topic LeeEnfieldNo4, what are you going to do in the CF?

Fn-fal

•The firearm of the design commonly known as the FN-FAL (FN-LAR) rifle, and any variant or modified version of it, including the FN 308 Model 44, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Competition Auto, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Heavy Barrel 308 Match, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Paratrooper 308 Match 50-64 and FN 308 Model 50-63.

but what i dont see is

SA58 carbine

Doesn't have to be named to be prohibited.

At some point, when Manufacturing a NEW Rifle it has to become something different than a FN FAL.

You would think there should be a reason for the initial ban, and at some point that reason is no longer valid.

The definition of Variant is "Deviating from a standard, usually by only a slight difference."

The Definition of Modified is "A slight change or alteration made to improve something or make it more suitable"

Considering there are at least 4 variants of named prohibs which are being sold, the actual law seems to have little to do with it, it comes down to our good friends at the FRT lab.

Hopefully pilot or air nav, but i am also looking at a few Navy jobs. unfortuatly I was not picked up thus year, I was sort of close, but not close enough. Gonna try again in December for the 2010 competition after doing some college.

"...a reason for the initial ban..." Black with a detachable mag and a pistol grip. Reason and logic had nothing to do with it. Blow guns(the way the law is written makes the straw in your milkshake a prohibited weapon), shuriken, nun-chuks and morning stars are prohibited too. Have been since 1978. We figured there were too many Medieval, Pygmie, ninja's holding up variety stores.

another question bout prohibs.
Are FAL that great shooters? I mean the hype around it would only be justifiable by that. Just get over it and pick another 7,62mm semi-auto. That and the Ak-47, two guns I'm not attracted in much, but seem to be very popular even though they are prohibs
I guess it's true you only appreciate what you cant get

bought a m14 (norinco) but that's cause my father liked them when he saw them in vietnam, accuracy wise I would've passed

For me, it is because the FAL is a legend. You mention it to some of the older soldiers and most of them still smile and remember that weapon. For me, it is just an intriguing piece of history, and a hell of a weapon.

Back then, FN was the symbol of the free world much like AK was the symbol of commie revolution.

you can have an AR variant(restricted) that fire's the 7.62 and use's an FAL mag but you cant have the FAL. does that make any sence at all
