alright so id like to buy a half decent rifle, wanting to get into moose hunting and some medium range deer hunting.... the rifle will be fitted with a good scope of course.... id like a .300 mag cuzz ive always wanted a magnum caliber rifle and .300 mag is cheapish to buy ....i would be handloading lighter bullets for the longer range deer hutning....

so any suggestions? i liked the remington 798 but it is no longer available so im drawing a blank now....

so suggest your faverite magnum rifle! it doesnt have to be .300 mag any rifle that you have that is avaialble in the same configuration in .300 mag feel free to post up!

i like both of mine, one T/C encore (you only need one shot afterall) with a 4200 3-9x40, bought the barrel off the ee. and savage weather warrior with 3200 3-9x40. i like the detachable mag and accutrigger on the savage. you can find the savages without the new accustock at some pretty good prices. both my .300 win mags are amazing guns.

Well now.

I bought a .300 win mag to replace my old Remington 742 in .308, ao I started looking at bolt rifles that have a removable mag.

After nearly a year of searching I found a Styr Mannlicher Prohunter in .300 win mag. Everyone that tries the rifle loves it.

My fathers only complaint is that it is heavier than his S.S. Remington in 7MM rem Mag. Hammer forged barrel, Smooth bolt action, really really nice trigger that is also easily resettable. Removable Magazine

I went for the .300 win mag as I like the .30 cal bullets and I wanted the range of a magnum. I know that you can now get them in Canada in S.S. I really like the Weight as it reduces some of the recoil. I bought mine for just over $1000 and put Leopold rings and My Leopold 3 X 9 on it and I really enjoy the rifle.

Any of the current production rifles will fill the bill just fine they all shoot well if they need help with a good bedding job that's fairly easy I don't even shoot a rifle till I glass bed the action as far as cal. any of the 300's work very well I like the 300WSM it performs very well 70gr. IMR and a 165 or 180gr bullet turns out great specs .Find one that fits and feels good and the rest is all Mathematics.

Not trying to be a dink or start anything, but I think you'd be better served by a 30-06. Yolu say you've always wanted a "magnum" I could be wrong, but your "ego list" includes nothing that will thrash you like a 300 Winchester will if you aren't prepared for it. The 30-06 is a much better way to get into hunting rifles without doing your shooting anything detrimental. A 30-06 or even a 308 would be a better way to get into big game rifles and you'll be able to sell it without any trouble should you decide to upgrade down the road.

Walk before you run.

I also think a 30-06 is a better starting point for a hunting rifle.

You can hunt any big game in North America with a 30-06. With a wide selection of available ammunition, you are able to chose lighter bullets shooting at 2900+fps for deer to heavy loads at 2500 to 2700 fps for Elk or Moose.

You never have to "stock-up" on ammo before a hunt, if you ever run out just head to the closest fueling station in rual canada to pick up a box of 30-06. The only ammo that is more common than 30-06 is 303 or 30-30.

Don't get me wrong, a 300 is definately a beautiful cartridge, Great for all of the above reasons I just stated for the 30-06, just a couple of hundred fps faster. Ammo for a 300 is just a little bit harder to find, and a bunch more expensive.

My $.02

Apparently notsorichguy and Biguglyman missed the part where .Ben said he would be reloading for the rifle so if that is the case then he will just load to what ever specs he desires if wants 308 or 30-06 specs then he can load to that level .

I just bought a used M70 .300 WM for $450. After putting a big Leupold scope on it and sighting in, it shot a 3/8" group, now I HAVE to hunt with it this year!

With many people trading in their old .300WM's to get a short mag or ultra mag, why not find a used .300 WM in good shape?

Anybody pick up the 2009 Special Hunting Issue of Outdoor Canada? It seems like every outfitter they sent a questionaire to chose the 300 win mag above all the others for Mule deer, Moose, Elk, Sheep and mountain goat. That said, the 30/06 and 7mm rem mag were always close seconds. I shoot a 300 winny in a Rem 700 and love hunting with it......I mean you don't want to shoot it all day at the range but I'm not worried about distant shots or takedown energy with it either.

This idea of corner store ammo is absolutely ridicules if you don't have your crap together when leaving on a hunting trip you should consider some other sport further more the corner store ammo dealers are almost extinct and will be extinct when we have a change of government .

A) Get a Blaser.. that's always my answer.... It's even in my name.

B) Try a Tikka.

But I would say, if you need the "mag" get a .338 mag.... you may as well hit like a cannon if your going to get one anyway.

Myself, I got over them a while ago, but every man has to do it themselves, because we just do. It's testosterone...

I don't really have any reasons for .338 mag, it was just my most successful mag, after I tried out .300 WM, .300 WSM, 7mm Mag, .338 Mag, .270 WSM and .375 H+H mag... Damn I've owned a lot of mags.... I have since sold all, and use a .308. And funny, now that I think about it, all I shot was deer with any mag... I shot my elk and moose with .308 and 257 weatherby.... Maybe I should get another mag.. Hmmmm....

I agree, the .06 has proven itself for over 100 yrs. and killed many large animals like moose and elk. If you handload premium bullets eg. barnes, swift, you will narrow the gap to the guy who buys fact. load ammo. in 300 mag. Plus you will be carrying most likly a lighter gun without a brutal recoil.

I think you should go to a few gun stores and try the feel of all the 300 mags you can find with detachable mags. All the new guns are great and will shoot well so try them all for feel. If I had to pick from a few I would try; Remington 700 DM, Browning X-bolt, Tikka T3, and a Sako (don't know enough about models, only that they are great).

Don't buy one until you've tried a few. I would also suggest a Stainless model.

Well no one said it, but if you want a strong actioned failsafe,,,,look at the M77 Ruger.
Great rifle and built very well built strong..

If you want a Utility gun, buy a 700 sps, or savage 116 both great rifles for the price.

If you want accuracy at low cost and will shoot anything buy a T-3, but they are light I find them to recoil more than others.

If you want it all buy a used Sako A series, or even a new 85

Maybe, but you have a common round that most shoot, you can always pawn some ammo off some other hunter if you forget yours. It's happened in our camp a time or two.

I would consider 3 options if it was me. Option 1 is the least expensive, an off the shelf Ruger 77. Option 2 is a CZ 550. The third option is the most expensive, but in the end it is the most rewarding and that is a custom or semi-custom rifle built with all the features you want on a big game rig. Given the cost of some of the Euro-rifles I would sooner go with the third option.

If you've always wanted a magnum rifle and have been grounded in the principles of marksmanship, there is nothing wrong with the choice of the .300 Winchester. I've loaded for them and shot them quite a bit and I have had good success with them. Again if it was me, I would consider the choice of a .300 H&H if you can find one, otherwise its a custom deal. I like heavy for caliber bullets, and the H&H's long neck is better suited to those. In the end there is no ballistic advantage of one over the other, and either is a good choice.

Well said.

And quite often those unprepared people that forgot their ammunition go hunting with ammunition that they haven't even fired in their gun,and and a result, they don't know where the point of impact is with the borrowed ammunition.

Amazing to me how often people say these crazy things:

- don't buy detach mags cause you will lose it / forget to bring it, and not be able to hunt
- get such and such a caliber because it's so common to find or you can borrow from someone in case you forget to bring some

Good grief people! How many times has this actually happened to anyone? Hands up! 'Fess up!
I have never lost a mag or forgot to bring ammo..... ever!
