Hello all,

I'm relatively new to the shotgun world and I'm looking for some opinions on these shotguns.
I want to get something that is good quality, reliable, and has a good aftermarket following as I have yet to find the firearm that perfectly fits my needs.
I have fired many shotguns in the past and this would be my firs shotgun that I will be owning.

Here is what I'm looking for.

8+1 capacity
Ghost-ring sights
No pistol grip ( I prefer the more traditional stock)
Good supply of aftermarket parts (follower, mag. extension, side saddle, sling ect)

The Remington 870 seems to be the most common shotgun I run across. So I'm leaning that way right now but any info would be most appreciated.

The use for the gun would be quite wide. I will be using it when camping, target shooting, hunting, and home defense (god forbid). I want to be able to fire all manner of buck shot and slugs through it as well. Basically I want this firearm to be as versatile as I can possible make it.

My budget for the firearm is around $1000.

I appreciate any advice.

You just described the Mossberg M590-A1, they go for around $750.00, P&D Enterprises has one in stock, check it out. I have the 14" version....one of the BEST shotguns in the market.
 
The 870 has a very smooth action, good weight and handles well. Has an archaic trigger block safety.

The 590 action is a bit rough, very light, top mounted safety. Is a bit long in the 9+1. But hey, you get a bayonet lug!.

I have a 590 Mariner and I love it.
 
Ok gents, here she is. Proper LAN-CAY M-9 bayo, speed feed stock, ghost ring sights and an extra heavy barrel. No heat shield required:D

Solid construction, USGI issue. If It's good enough for the Marines...

The 590 controls work really well with the traditional stock, for a stock with a pistol grip go with the 870. The Ghost rings on my 590 work great and come stock.
 
serously buy a mossberg 500 and put on the ghost rings.

I have a 590 and two 500s. they are virtually identical. exept my 590 action is butter smooth, one 500 is pretty smooth and the other is a bit rough.
 
They are both great guns. The moment you said no pistol grip the answer became 590A1. Enjoy.
 
590A1s are great guns and I'll never knock them but the 870 offers more versatility in that you can swap barrels of different length, configuration and magazine length {bigger is not always better} at need. I've got a 12.5" front blade sighted barrel and a 28" bead sighted sporting length barrel to go along with my factory 18.5" rifle sighted barrel for my 870.

That brings me to another thing, ghost rings aren't really any better as an all around sight than rifle sights and they reduce your versatility, since they don't lend themselves to many types of shotgunning tasks and you're pretty much stuck with them as your only iron sight option since your rear sight is attached to the reciever.

Pretty much everything available for the 870 is available or has an equivalent for the 590, although it's a *lot* easier to get shorter than 18" barrels for the 870 in Canada if that's your thing.

Anyway I think the Ithaca 37 is a nicer pump than either of them but lacks their massive array of accessories and the ease of servicing.
 
as for previous posts on the 590's action being rough. yes it is when its new but after enough rounds through it, it becomes nice and smooth as well. mine is juuuuuust about perfect.
 
Get the Mossy 590. I was in the same situation in the spring, and I was just about to get the 870 Tactical (way too cool with the ported choke on the front!) when a 590 with Ghost rings came up on the EE.:D

I picked it up and used it for my first 3-gun match, and found out then that I had made the right decision for my needs. The 590 holds more rounds than the 870 (don't believe what they tell you for the round count on the Tactical 870...there were a couple guys there with them, and they couldn't hold as many rounds as advertised), and is better for reloading. There is no gate in the way.

The 870 is a great gun, and has the advantage of chokes in the full Tactical version. You can't go wrong with either one, but they each have advantages and disadvantages over the other. Check them out for YOUR needs.:)
 
The Mossbergs aren't likely to be as smooth as an 870 with the same amount of use but they seem to extract and eject with a lot more snap for a given amount of pump effort, I believe they're a bit less likely to be short stroked as a result.
 
So far it seems like the 590A1 SPX with the standard stock, heavy bbl, and 20" barrel is what I'm looking for.
Is there an 870 model that comes close to the same specs as the 590A1 does?
I want to weight each one equally and see which meets my needs best but it seems as though it would be hard to go wrong with either :p
