OK,
here are a few pics of my newest 14 shorty wearing a monolithic railed handguard that clamps on the barrel between the two legs of the gas assembly, and bolts into the stripper clip guide and the usual scope mount hole.

Shown for comparison is the usual Ultimak railed HG, which has the two removeable side rails removed.

Also, my AKM CHOP MOD, which has has a shortened handguard, and which uses a TWO PIECE rail.

I intend to combine all the best features of these three M14 munimula HG designs.
Once I chop mod the newest monolithic HG to shorten it at the top, and hang it off of a rectangular op rod guide instead of clamping it to the barrel at the gas block, and make the barrel/handguard free floating off of the op rod guide, and extend the rear of the rail back to the rear sight pocket,
I will finally have the M14 top rail that I want.
This may be commercially available one of these days.

Also in the works is a munimula bottom half for the M14.
Hopefully we'll have something to show at the M14 seminar next week in Saanich.

The stock is still in the prototype stage ...
and it ain't mine to show.

Besides, this way you get to see the rectangular AKM styled free floating op rod guide, and the barrel attachment plate at the gas assembly.

PS: the top rail does not actually require those detachable BUIS, as it is deeply grooved, and the original M14 sights could be used through the channel, under the scope rings.

I prefer the detachable BUIS, as I plan on removing the M14 rear sight, and using the rear sight pocket as another attaching point.

dream on ....

What is the advantage of the free floating op-rod guide when so much other stuff is attached to the barrel?

There is NOTHING attached to that barrel except a clamp between the gas assembly legs.

Personally, if I was going to attach a handguard that long, I would tie it in with the gas assembly using a custom rectangular ferrule, tightly squeezed between the gas assembly and the barrel, just like a unitised gas assembly on a standard stock.

I want a shorter handguard AND a free floating barrel, like my AKM chop mod, so using a rectangular op rod guide and attaching there makes the most sense to me.

So if the op-rod guide does not attach to the barrel, what is retaining it?

Looks to be about the same offset as an AR.

Ya, except the AR has a straight stock in line with the bore. M14 - not so much.
The M14 stock's drop combined with the high sights is going to be the source of some serious turkey-necking.
With high scope bases (think Leapers, Marstar, even SA) and tall rings, I have seen guys' rifles with the cheek risers at the top adjustment and then the butt is too low to sit properly in their shoulder pocket.

I'll never figure out why ones needs to make a heavy rifle heavier?

Scott

If you think that that billet rail adds that much weight you are dreaming.

If you think the m14 is heavy you should start bulking up, they aren't that bad at all. I hunt and push bush carrying mine without issue. I reccomend shoulder presses and supinated bicep curls. ;)

Looks very much like the TROY M14 Battlerail

The one Laz is showing off mounts up via the stripper clip guide and the scope mount bolt hole.

Troy's mounts up via the rear sight ears.

Personally, I prefer going to the ears myself (it just makes better sense to me) in back, but the front setup on Laz's mount looks much better, and less fiddly for tension (provided you do the freefloat at the oprod guide, something I'm planning to do.) I've been using my free time to waste paper by drawing various mount setups.

I'm thinking that Laz is showing off either the future Rauch or M14Doctor offering. One of these is gonna hit soon, I just don't know when, and I doubt Laz, Sean or Thomas are gonna say much right now.
