A 19-year-old woman is in serious condition after an attack by two coyotes Tuesday afternoon in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in northern Nova Scotia.
Provincial RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Brigdit Leger said the woman was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax for treatment. She described the victim's injuries as "very, very serious."
Paul Maynard, a spokesman for Emergency Health Services, said the woman had wounds all over her body. Her hiking partner was not hurt.
Cheticamp RCMP said they received a 911 call on Tuesday reporting that a hiker was being attacked by two coyotes on the Skyline Trail. Leger said an RCMP officer happened to be about five minutes from the trail.
Mounties said they shot and killed one of the animals that continued to be aggressive. Officials with the Department of Natural Resources said the dead animal is being sent to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to be tested for rabies.
The CFIA has the capacity to test animals for diseases such as rabies, scrapie and West Nile virus.
The second coyote escaped into the woods and Parks Canada and RCMP officers were looking for the animal.
