I'm also a MG-42 man. Can't beat the volume they put out.

And as far as the comment about being the top "target", if you're doing your job right on the machine gun, they don't even get close enough to shoot back.

And think about manning a defensive station on D-day. Do you want a pithy little Mp-44 to cover the beach, or an MG-42 and a bunker full of ammo?
 
I picked the K98 and the P-38.

Read up on some history.... you'll find out the life expectancy of a German machinegunner, especially on the Eastern front, was minimal.

From what I understand, life expectancy on the Russian front wasn't that great for anybody.

Vy deed I just hear General Burkehalter saying zat? Izn't zat right Klink?

I went with the MP-44.

From the few German accounts I have read, I get the distinct impression that long term survival as a front line soldier hinged on getting wounded and spending as much time in hospital as possible.

You have a point. The "Beast of Omaha Beach" badly mauled the Americans in "Easy Red" sector with two MG 42's and a couple of K 98's he used while the MG barrels cooled.

That was defending a beach though from well surveyed positions. Since the war was so static, I would have liked a rifle that was effective and easier to lug around on the ever changing battlefield.

I still say the StG 44 would be my choice.
 
and then there is that german machine gunner on that american beach on day, forgot which beach, he was in national geographic and a special on tv who killed over 2000 americans with his mg and rifle, no matter if he is the enemy he should still get the iron cross for that deed, better late than never
 
I voted mg42, but anyone else that has had the experience of carrying one around, or even picking one up will tell you it is heavy! I could not imagine lugging that thing around to your next position! Never fired one before, just got to handle a deactivated one, but i don't think i'd be able to shoot it and remain standing like u see in games :D...

I voted 42 over 34 because of ruggedness, 34 is a beautiful piece of art, but they switched to the 42 for a reason (some economically motivated, but higher tolerances, quicker barrel change, etc too).

I don't mind the barrel change latch style of the 42, apparently some guns were stiffer to open than others, but its a pretty simple process that can be done real quickly!

Last time I checked, the guys at the bunker lost... :D

My personal preference is maneuvrability, I want a weapon with a big enough round so they won't get back up, and I can penetrate cover. IMHO (key word being My) the FG-42 is damn near perfect.
 
None of the above, I would have gone for trip to Sweden found myself a nice Swedish Woman to marry and signed up with their military so I could use a Swedish Mauser. :D

iirc weren't the US GIs issued weapons from the way they lined up for formation from shortest to tallest? and they started with the BAR so most of the time the short guy got the big gun?

and another faded memory is the Canadians from the 1st Special Service Force when introduced to the BAR said that B-A-R was short for Bloody Awful Rifle
