Long range shooting on Crown land in Ontario

This is a question for long range shooters who reside in Ontario.

Any one knows of Crown land where I can shoot out to 2000 meters? I only know of three military ranges where I can shoot to 1000 meters after becoming a member of Ontario Rifle Association. I live near Toronto and am looking for some place to try shooting past 1000 meters

Presumably your long range target shooting would have to be in compliance with game laws. In many parts of Southern Ontario this rules out bores larger than a .270.

Other than an appropriate stretch of power line, I can't think of where I might look (and I don't know the Ontario rules and regs w.r.t. powerline rights of way - in NB for example, they are not necessarily Crown or public lands, the belong to the private landowners whose land they cross, and whose permission you would need to get in order to be on them).

I am interested in seeing what others suggest or what you might find.

You might want to contact Milcun Enterprises, they are a few (~3?) hours east of Toronto. I don't know if they have >1000m possibilities or not, but they would be the first people I'd talk to.

I have never had issues safely shooting in this location. I have encountered 2 Conservation Officers outside of hunting season that seemed more interested in my equipment than how far I was shooting. I don't shoot in the fall as the roads pictured are constantly run by 4 wheelers during hunting season. So my respect to them to not cause problems.

There are 3 valleys that you can see. The measured distance out to the farthest point where the road goes over the last hill is 2.4km.

THere is a hydro line that runs north from the Lennox and Addington Generating station. Somewhere up around Tamworth it is pretty isolated and there was a decent stretch there.

If I was still in Ontario I would go back and look for it. Haven't seen it since my deer hunting days years ago............

this would be a setup I'd love to have. I'm assuming it is legal since conservation officer left you alone, can you please confirm for the idiots (aka me). Your location is listed as petawawa, any chance you'd care to divulge a little more on just where this is?

Wow. That rocks. I've never thought of doing that. Didn't even cross my mind as a possibility as I figured it's a no-no.

Its my understanding that shooting on Crown Land is legal. I thought I may have run into issues with....."You're not shooting at the powerlines are YOU?" From the COs.
I figured if anyone were to tell me not to, it would be them. I've never seen Police out this far.

As for location, its about an hour drive from Petawawa. Westbound on Highway 17 in Mackey. About 7km off the highway. The road/trail that runs up the center of the powerlines comes to an Algonquin Park Gate access point. The road continues up the right side for 3km and eventually turns into an OFSC trail heading to North Bay. I have never seen traffic coming at me from this location , however, I always drive to the gate just to make sure there hasn't been any recent travelersor hunters, then turn around and make my set up.

The power lines are closer if you turn left at Rolphton. Having said that, I believe a pick up truck should be the vehicle of choice. It can handle the rough road, and has a ready-made shooting platform. It's actually a very nice location to shoot LR.

Thanks for sharing this info. I have a 50 cal rifle and a small bush plane. A friend and I are interested in locations in Northern Ontario that we could fly to for a weekend of long range shootin. Anymore info on locations similar to this would be appreciated.

Im sorry Gunsliger. I thought I was posting a question to likeminded people, with similar abilities. I know your jealous, just dont give up. Things will get better for you someday. I bet you like to sling your gun:jerkit:

Well that one went right over your head. Smilies should have given you a clue. Regardless no offence intended.

Your nav charts should be a good start since they show power lines, check that against crown land maps plus your ability to scout from the air and you should be all set.
