Apparently, the regular TAVOR family will be replaced by M-TAVOR, starting in 2011. Golani and Givati will be getting them first - and a version with longer barrel is considered for the reserves. The experimental M-TAVOR battalion will be equipped in March 2010.

It has nothing to do with barrel length. If it was up to me i would go with the 18 inch barrel for all riflemen.TAR has 18 inch barrel, CTAR-15 inches,MTAR-13 inches. You can have any barrel length in a MTAR from 10 to 18 inches.

WITH THE SAME BARREL LENGTH :

The MTAR has a shorter overall length than TAR/CTAR

It's lighter.

It also has a shorter length of pull.

The butt stock is less bulky ( height ) .

The position of the mag release and the charging handle allow quicker reloads and stoppage clearance.

The shape and size of the bolt release reduce the chances of premature/accidental bolt release.

The handguard+charging handle location on the MTAR allows rail attachment on all sides unlike on the TAR/CTAR.

The handguard +charging handle location on the MTAR allows the barrel to free float.

The handguard on the MTAR allows the use of telescopic sound suppressors
or shorter barrels than 13 inches with regular sound suppressors.

The safety switch on the MTAR is easier to operate.(45 degrees)

You can remove the pistol grip therefore the size of the trigger guard is up to the operator's choice.

Trigger pull is much better.

These are only a few reasons why I would choose the Micro Tavor over the regular Tavor as a bases for an entire weapon family(rifle, carabine,DMR,GL)

If any of the listed advantages are unclear or not obvious I'll explain in further details.

Israel has successfully marketed the different variants of the TAR-21 around the world, so there's no reason to only continue manufacturing the MTAR as the IDF isn't the only customer.

I highly highly doubt that the TAR 21 Tavor is going out of production. I can see why Israel is moving to the shorter barreled platform, it makes sense due to their fighting conditions.

The massive export and licensing agreements IWI has made for the tavor make it highly unlikely you will see these rifles falling out of production in their original form.

This is good to hear, I've been dying to get a Tavor and am not a fan of the look of the mtar, though shooting it may change my mind. But regardless, I love the look of the tar/ctar, just wish I could spare the $3k right now :\

The question now becomes when can I get a Micro?

After I get mine! :D CanAmm - if you're listening, the money can be on deposit in 24hrs! LOL!

Definitely a "must have" IMO!

The manufacturer should start producing civilian versions ASAP, so we can provide valuable feedback. Forget about the military trials - too many political and economic factors influencing feedback!

Columbia, Thailand, Guatemala and a host of smaller countries will keep the regular TAVOR and M21 in production for awhile at IWI.

Does that mean we got some "surplus" Tavors?

They do have the fun switch, right?

I don't think so. They still haven't figured out a GL for the M-TAVOR - so the article basicly said, if you are a grenadier, you are stuck with the long TAVOR. The integration of M203 to the regular tavor is sucky (bracketing the GL on the flashsuppressor.....)

Personally, I don't think a full scale transition to a 12" barrel for regular line infantry is a wise-move. There are places for the regular TAVOR -such as a DMR role - a longer LOP for traditional shooting stance. There is also more estate in the regular TAVOR to mount accessories (for example, if you need a more powerful IR laser and illuminator.) The M-TAVOR is tight for any accessories. But I guess they are counting on the MOR or MARS for the IR laser.

For the door kickers, the M-TAVOR is appropriate - but I guess they are more concerned about fighting in Gaza, West Bank and Lebanon,......and taking a bus ride to Eilat - if I am going to Negev and sinai again, I want a full size TAVOR. There isn't a big chance since Egypt is not hostile anymore.
