Different bullet found in bullet box.

Hey guys,

I bought a brand new never opened box of .224 77GR Sierra BTHP MK’s. I pulled my knife out and cut the sticker and opened it up. The second bullet I pulled out of the box was a .308 175GR BTHP MK. Has this ever happened to anyone before?

It was not a big deal because the 30 was easily distinguishable. But if it was to be a heavier bullet of the same cal and you were running near max loads and did not catch it there could possibly be an over pressure situation. I wonder if I phone Sierra if there could be a couple boxes of free bullets in my future.

This has happened to me on one occasion, though I don't recall exactly what brand of bullets it was. There was one .243 bullet in a box of .308's. It seems to me it might have been Noslers of some type...

It pays to pay attention and look at every component you're reloading.

I've had that, in El Cheapo boxes of plated excel bullets. Also in a box of speer bullets, which was taped shut when I bought it (I know [so does another cgn'r] what happened with that one though ;)).
It's always been very obvious, that the bullets were completely different calibers. Even if the weights were different on the same caliber, if you are handling them, it SHOULD be fairly obvious by the size, if it's a difference that'll make a difference pressure-wise. Of course if you are using a progressive with a bullet feeder, you could be in a spot of trouble.
Odd that it would come in a box of Sierra's, was it sealed when you bought it? Go ahead and give a call, but don't be surprised if you don't get anywhere. Did you count the bullets? Were the right number in the box? I believe they pack them by weight, and that 30 cal bullet weighs about 2.4x22 caliber bullets.

I found three 7mm bullets in a factory-sealed box of Barnes .270 once. They were easy to pick out though as they were blue coated while the 270's weren't.

I had a new sealed box of Hornady .308 150gr. spire point bullets that contained one 150 gr. spire point for the .303 british, .312 diameter if I remember correctly. They look identical until you measure them... I only found it 'cuz it stuck in my bullet seating die.
I was loading a .308 Win. to maximum pressure levels at the time, I do not want to personally find out what a .004" oversize bullet would in that situation but I don't think it would be good.
I wrote Hornady to inform them, and they pretty much told me "s**t happens" and they offered no explanation of the QC measures that they use to ensure mixing bullets does not happen at their factory. The experience did not give me confidence in Hornady products!

I had a box of remingtom 223 52 gr match bullets with three different kinds of bullets in it. They gave me a generous supply of bullets in compensation.

I used to work in an ammo factory. The production lines have QC insectors that eyeball the components as they pass by. They pick out the obvious defects. At the end of a day, they have a box or pail with a whole bunch of defective components, in a variety of calibers. Every once in awhile the forklift operator graps one of these post-inspection buckets and it gets packaged. S**t happens.

I had a 140 grain TSX that didn't have the grooves cut into it show up in a box of normal ones. I sent a picture to Barnes for fun, and they said that they'd send up some bullets for bringing it to their attention. A day later I got another email saying that due to export laws they couldn't send them, and would I like some CR-10 instead? Despite telling them not to bother, a bottle of CR10 showed up by courier.
