Gov issued or personal AR for Cdn Mil.?

Can any soldier choose to take his personal rifle instead of accepting the one issued to him/her when they arrive at whatever country they are sent to? Is there a particular rank or particular jobs that allow you bring your own with you, or are members of the Canadian Military never allowed to use anything other than gov issued weapons? I've seen some soldiers post about using different types of AR's and even 1911's but I don't remember reading if they were Canadian Military or employed by someone else.
 
The best answer is no. You will use what is given to you. There have been some times when people have been alound to use there one uppers, but those are special times and circumstances.

I'm not a soldier, and I didn't stay at a holiday in express last night, but I don't think that would fly. The potential for that to end badly [for a CO] would be high - consider - they allow a grunt to bring his own rifle - for some reason it malfunctions and the soldier is injured or dies. The rifle is out of the supply chain - no accountability. The family sues. Game over.

Basically, it's CF owned-only for all. Some units might have some varied armaments, but it's all owned by the crown, no personal firearms in theatre of operations.

You might get the odd unit range day in the fall in Canada with a CO who let's guys zero their hunting rifles. But that's about it for shooting something you own while on duty.

Maybe ex-CF, now working as security contractors or trainers?
 
They won't even let us wear non CF-issued boots (well it's OK if you don't get caught, I still wear my Danners |-) ), so forget it about firearms...

I've been made aware of one case where a Canadian Forces CO allowed an MP - assigned to close protection - to carry his personally-owned Norinco 1911A1. This occurred within Canada.
 
I've seen guys add lots of their own extras onto an issued firearm (Flashlights, sights, grips, handguards) but in the end it was still a CF firearm.

As my buddy who is in the unit you are describing said....."not a chance" when I sent this too him. No one but no one is allowed to use personally owned firearms in that organization.

As far as the army of old...likely people did all kinds of silly things like bring personal firearms. That is the past. Current units and organizations....never happen.
 
Over on the sniper central boards, the american military personnel have mentioned bringing their own gear and guns to the sandbox, but it's apparently a technical "no-no" that's "ok if you don't get caught" type of thing, and it really depends on which commanding officers you're under as to how much they're willing to overlook, and the advice is to not bring anything over, that you can't afford to get confiscated if worst comes to worst.

Well I keep on seeing all these Canadian soldiers with AK's from A Stan if you found a 1911 could one carry it outside the wire? From what I was told on Dragoon Squadron had AK's in the back of their LAV.

Non-issue chest rigs, rails, boots, holsters, accessories, I can understand, and have gotten away with....

But once it comes to PPE and actual firearms, it's not something most CoC's will turn a blind eye to.

don't get me wrong, I would have much preferred carrying my G17 than my BHP.
