What I want that I can afford, but can never have:

DSA OSW SA58:

And enough 308/7.62 to fill my basement <sigh>

What is your realistic unobtanium?.

DS Arms makes new US made semi only receivers which they use in their SA58 builds.
For years now I have wanted a proper explanation as to why these are unobtainum. All i ever got from arguing with CFC experts was "Its still a FAL and you cant import one". If that were so then the norc M14 and the M1A would be in the same boat:confused:
Anyone care to explain?

I'll help ya fight for it, because I want one too!

Has anyone on this sight or elsewhere ever put together a list of these issues and discussed it with the RCMP other than informally? I find it ridiculous that firearms are banned because of a picture. If convertibility to FA is the issue then that should be the criteria and not some picture. How do you get OIC changes made?

Unfortunately, it is due to the fact that the FAL is specifically named as a prohib, while the M-14 was not. I don't know for sure - I'm thinking maybe they didn't realize that there were semi auto copies in existance, so they might have thought a blanket ban of the converted autos would be enough, or maybe there were other reasons. Either way, I'm glad they made such an oversight.

I would absolutely love to have a FAL of any kind. Until that day, I'll proudly use my Norinco M-14S (I think I'll even keep it after I get a FAL.:D)

Looking at the prohib list, I can't see the M249 SAW listed as a prohib either. Any one see it listed?

After looking at the prohibited list, I could not find the M-14. However, this caught my eye.

"SG-550 rifle and SG-551 carbine and variants"

Swiss Arms sells the semi-automatic variants of them, and they are perfectly legal. Since technically the Swiss Arms rifles are variants, would this not be a precedent to get the DSA FALs legal? Or am I totally over simplifying this?

I'm not sure, but I think I've read from a few threads here that the Swiss Arms rifles have the mechanism from the SIG 540, which is not on the ban list. Apparently, sometimes this is good enough for the RCMP to let them by as a legal design - same thing with the AR180B - the design was changed just enough that it was decided that it wasn't a variant. I guess it depends on the mood of the guys at the FRT lab.

As much as I'd like to have a FAL, I don't really see the point in really short barrels on a .308 rifle. My choice would be for the 18" barrel.

You might actually get the SIGs "illegalized". And that would put a hurtin' on ya!

m-14 is not on the list simply because it enters the full auto class
semi-auto versions are different (not real m-14 )

Well said, and that is exactly my point. The real FN FAL is on that prohib list yet the semi auto FAL from DSA (not real FAL) is not considered different. Why is that? It makes no sense!!
DSA's receiver is semi only as ruled by the BATF and US made so WTF:confused:.
