Not everyone is a recreational target shooter, and not everyone wants to have more than one centrefire rifle. Recoil-perception can be subjective, but it is safe to say that not everyone enjoys recoil, that - sometimes - recoil can be remembered long after the shot, and that our anticipation (of recoil) can interfere with practical accuracy.

If you are cornered, and asked to recommend one chambering for one rifle for the non-gun-enthusiast, non-reloading, recoil-sensitive, guy on a budget who wants to be able to use it on coyotes, whitetail deer, black bear (from a tree stand), and moose, all with ammunition that is widely available, which would you choose?

You don't need anything bigger than a .308 in Canada my friend. Unless your planning 300+ yard shots on some big Moose, but even then it would be 300 win mag. Although I have seen a 300 win mag hit a coyote and it is quite a sight, but the meat damage to a deer would be too much.

If you don't want the coyote pelts the .308 would work quite well for everything listed. or .30-30, or .270, or .30-06, and the list goes on

The last time I was out as backup on a grizzly hunt,
in willows,
with a BIG grizz out there some where ,
close enough to hear him snuffling and snorting,
but smart enough not to show himself,
the 308 seemed awfully small for the job at hand.

Other than that,
the .308 Win is probably the most versatile rifle caliber on the planet.

Taking ALL these factors into consideration, I say .308 win. The 7mm-08 has even less recoil, but if your friend is on a budget, he's likely better off with the .308...

I'd vote .308 the only reason I say that over the 30-06 though is because it has a very slight advantage in the recoil department with all other things being equal.

7mm-08 is also a very good choice, however ammo cost and availability have to be considered.

I only own 2 centrefire rifles currently, a 30-30 lever that was my grand-dads, and a husqvarna 1600 in 6.5x55.

IMO the 6.5 gets the nod

Great cartridge, but I think the factory ammo may leave him wanting...Not much selection.

How many different loaded ammo selections do we really need for a hunting rifle? Remington core lokt is perfect for med sized game (I use federal, think it's 300fps faster? and my rifle likes it 1moa better) and really a moose probably wouldn't know the difference, but if you wanted to you could step up to loaded Lapua ammo. 155gr Mega sp($2.15/rnd), or 140gr Naturalis ($2.95/rnd) from Hirsch Precision. Yes that sounds expensive, but remeber it's for hunting with.

Taking a quick look at bcsteve's bullet test shows both the naturalis, and mega did very well.
