If you were to pick a rifle for big game like deer, moose and black bear which round would be the better choice assuming there is no law restrictions?

I understand that the 30-06 would be better for moose but is it overkill on whitetail? On the otherhand a .270 Win would work great for deer but would it be undergunned on a bull moose?

Does either one of these rounds cover the "big game" spectrum better than the other?

I would go with the 30-06 because you have more bullet choices.... heavier bullets for moose and it's not overkill on deer. A 270 will certainly work on moose though.

The 30-06 is more versatile, no question about it. The .270 win is a fine cartridge, but you're putting it up against THE most widely recognized "If a person only had one rifle..." cartridge in North America.

I think you should get one of those .477 superduperextrashortandandfatturbomagnums

Really thought. These two cartridges are so far appart you might best be served going to the .308 wich sits right in the middle of those two.

Just get a 30-06, load it with 168 grain barnes tripleshocks, and go shoot. It'll take down a moose no sweat and it'll just punch a nice round hole in even the smallest deer and not give you too much damage. And it'll do all that from 25 yards out past 300 comfortably, reliably and accurately (assuming your gun likes barnes.)

Probably the best 'all around' combo out there.

I like both. The .30-06 with a 200gr Accubond @ 2750 fps is quite the performer, imo. It shoots flat enough and carries plenty of punch out to very long distances due to the excellent BC.

Neither...get a 280 Remington .
I have 270s, 30-06s and a 308 but my killing gun is my Model 700 Remington AS in 280 Remington .
I load 139 grain Hornadys over 60.7 grains of H4831 giving me a velocity of 3000'\sec . With this bullet I've shot everything from Partridges to Moose from 10 yards to over 500 and all mostly were one shot kills .
I've killed more than 28 deer, moose, bear and wolves in 6 years with this gun....not counting the two years that I didn't pull the trigger on anything .

just get a 30-06... You can't go wrong with that. I'm pretty sure it's in the top 3 calibers that killed the most big games in Canada but that's just my opinion...

.303 Brit, 30-30 and 30-06

I have killed, and seen killed, a lot of moose, caribou and bear with both of them. While both work very well, it is my distinct impression that the 270 is a little easier to hit with at long range.

Just take your pick, and go hunting. :)

With normal weight bullets the choice of .270, .280. or .30/06 makes little difference. They all shoot flat and kill well, with tolerable recoil. The .30/06 is my hands down favorite rifle cartridge, but that is not to suggest that the other 2 lack in any way.

Like Boomer says, they are all good calibers, but to me there is something about the 7 mm that is just right especially at the magical speed of 3000 '/sec.
