Photo Album: Favorite hunting rifle aquisitions of 2009

Touche!!!!!

And what are you talking about all educated now? Been collecting the damn things longer than you and I still ain't edumacated. Seems like just when you get em figured out Savage throws a loop at you.

Unfortunately I only have a Savage BA, no masters or doctorate yet. ;)

My newest favorite hunting rifle for 2009 was my Corlane's built Model 70 Classic Featherweight chambered in .338-06. It has a free floated, fluted SS Pac-Nor barrel finished at 23" with a recessed muzzle. The bolt lugs were lapped for 100% even contact and the trigger is tweaked to break like glass. The butt wears a Pachmyer decelerater pad and all metalwork is powder coated in matte black. The whole package, complete with Leupold VariX III 2.5x-8X in Tally mounts, weighs in at 7 lbs 8 ozs.

With the first 200gr handloads printing 1" for three shots at 100 yards, there's no doubt what the result would have been had I encountered a legal moose.

Whoa! That is a gorgeous Springfield 1884, H4831! Mine is pretty nice, but yours is a real head-turner for sure! Here's a photo of mine. I actually got it last year, but plan to take it deer hunting year after this ....

At least I'll know who's shooting when I hear that thing go off on the F&G line!
When those 500 grain cast bullets start chugging their way cross country, keep your head down. They move slow ..... but so does a bulldozer.:D

I guess you could say I bought this in 2009, right at the very tail end of it. All original pre 64 Model 70 in 300H&H. Took some time and money to convince the owner(CGN member) that he wanted to sell it :D

Toss up for me. I really like my Remington 700 LTR DM in .308 Win as the replacement gun for two separate shooters I had in .308 Win or the CZ 527 American in .223 Rem (coyote rifle).

These are a couple of my newest hunting rifle's. First one is a 7600 in 35 Whelen, the second is my newest addition is a Sako 85 in 260 Rem, and last is a Rem 700 mountain rifle in 260 Rem which just left for a new home:). Other's not pictured are my Beretta Extrema 2, and Rem 1100 Sporting 20. Looks like 2010 is going to be just as expensive.:D

Heh, heh! Good to hear from you Blake! I wouldn't have it any other way. So far, I've bagged deer with a couple 45-70's, a 38-55, a 44-40 and a 30-30, all with cast bullets. Next year it is this .45-60 and the following year I have an old single shot Springfield Model 1888 .45-70 that is waiting in line to help fill the freezer. I've got about 800 pounds of lead wheelweights in my garage to practice with too!

... and those big bores eat the lead in bigger bites - 800 pounds won't last forever!!!

Digger2 That 35 Whelen Looks Familiar:D

Is That one of the factory carbine ones, or did ya have it shortened???

Unfortunately it is a full rifle cut back, only a few of us here have the original 35 Whelen Carbine;) This is one of my favorite rifles, it is my go to gun for heavy cover deer/bear. I think that if there was to be a special Remington run this should be it-hands down.:D

X2 :agree:

I have dibs on the wheelweights from a few local garages, so I'm accumulating lead faster than I am shooting it off. Good thing too, because one pound of lead only gives me fourteen, 500-grain bullets for my Springfield.

I had that same setup about 5 years ago that I sold to a buddy with neck/back problems. It was the most accurate hunting rifle I ever owned.

This gun did produce some decent groups for the limited number of rounds I actually shot at 100yds, about 1" with some 95gr Vmax. Somethings else caught my eye, so this gun is on it's way to it's new owner in Sask.:) I'm sure he will be very happy with it. Great caliber in a fine hunting rifle IMO.
