.308, 00 buck, or slug for grizzly?!

I forgot to mention that my hunting rifle is a M88 in .308 loaded with 150 grain loads for bears deer and anything else that walks on 4 legs and I use it with no fear that I'm under gunned as I've faced down an irritated bear already with it but my hiking/walking guns is the 45/70 I mentioned as it's 2lbs lighter and barely Non-Restricted and I can still hit a pie plate easily 9/10 at 100 yards Iron sights. The people here saying a .308 or 30-06 is good are not lying you just have to be comfortable with your firearm and have a good quality bullet and know the bullet.

Pathfinder you are very right a defense gun you do not want a scope. Which is why I still have only the irons on my 45/70 and leave my irons on all my guns if they have them. FAST acquisition is required and not easy with scope. So this is what the 2 millionth bear defense thread?

how about you move along instead?

I cant I just bit my tongue and cheek.;)

Really so how many folks get all geared up for a bear encounter, and have yet to even lay eyes on a bear?

Your best armament for bear is to first engage the grey matter between your ears, all the other accutriments are a distant second.

I asked my Dad who recently passed away, how he survived in Jasper, from all those maurading bruins, he chuckled and said, if ya aint got the brains of a turnip, you deserve to be mauled.

I've worked in lots of bear country(13 yrs), all I got was a Satt phone and some bear spray, I have'nt had to use either BTW.

Here is my 2 cents, unless super proficient under extreme stress chances are you will short stroke a shotgun and jam the weapon. Our hunting party packs 450 marlins all of which are lever action, 18.5 inch barrels, shooting either 350 or 400 grain bullets. A comparison test between a 12 gauge shotgun (22 inch rifled barrel, shooting 3 inch nosler magnum slugs) shooting a 12 inch tree only penetrated 3/4 of the way through at 15 yards. The wound channel was impressive but the bullet retention was minimal with only about 75% of the slug remaining. The 450 marlin at 15 yards blew through the entire tree with similar wound channel patterns. So our hunting party is more confident with the sheer devastation the 450 round creates, but as I have learned through reading on the threads a 308 round shot in C.N.S. (central nervous system) will do just as good. Its not just about hitting the bear its about hitting the bear in the right spot under pressure.......

did you really get the impression that i am worried from my post? i put my sealtbelt on when i drive, but that doesnt mean that i am worried about crashing.

i have camped all of my life and only started owning my own guns last year.
even a .22 would have been more armed than i was.

You can answer your own posts? How does that work?

4 encounters with a bear for me in the 2 years I've been hunting.

1st I got out without the bear knowing I was there after I walked up to it in a clear cut looking for bunnies in august with just my .22

2nd bear was very mad I was there but didn't move just growled at me till I got out of the berry patch and back in to the tree line and I had my .308 but didn't want bear same year as 1st encounter and my first year hunting

3rd the bear ended up in my freezer as pepperoni, sausage and roasts .308 2nd year hunting

4th bear didn't see me on the trail and I turned around and headed back I was looking for grouse and not an old bear with gray hair 28 gauge in hand and a .308 over my back

ive laid eyes on bears before, grizzlys too.

i dont understand why your dad felt that you had to have the brains of a tulip to not get mauled.

it awesome that you feel that you dont need a gun in the bush and im really happy for you, but i didnt start this thread in order for you to beat your chest. it is for a recommendation on a calibre and ammo choice when you have already encountered that one in a million rare grizzly.

anyone complaining about too many grizzly threads is free to click a different topic and leave this one alone.

please refrain from posting on this thread.

if it is a subject that you have noting to contribute on, generally you are expected to click on another thread that could use your 'insight'.

Perhaps you should look at the hundreds of other Bear defense threads on this site that have been written usually once a week for the past few years.

BTW the answer is, use whatever firearm you are proficient and using in such a situation.

You do know Jasper is a National Park hence the no firearms stuff, and as for my jobs well, lots of companies have zero firearm rules.

If your stoking up the firepower, and leaving your brain in the jar on the counter, your a mauling looking to happen that's all.

Just because someone offers an opinion 180 degress out of phase to your thinking does'nt mean they are side tracking your thread.
