Marlin 444

Yep, had two, just sold one. What do you want to know? Nice hard hitting lever action. Both will shoot MOA at 100yds.

These are the two that I had.

I sold the top one, kept the bottom one and changed the stock to a grey laminate.

I have a Marlin 444S that I've mounted a 1.5-4.5 Bushnell Scopechief VI on using Weaver pivot mounts. It's accounted for a few Moose and Deer and I've found bullets like the 265gr Hornady are an improvement over the original 240gr factory loads. In addition, its a caliber that lends itself well to cast bullet loads.

A buddy of mine has a 444s it has a jaming problem .the cartridge feeding in from the mag will get jammed part way into the action.its an older gun witch is new to him.the triggger is also very heavy.what solutions are there for these problems.

What's the difference between a Marlin Model 444 and the Model 444S?

Apparently there were initially two models that were chambered for the 444 cartridge, the 444P and the 444S. What the difference is I don't really know but I would guess barrel length and possibly butt stock and lever design may be. I vaguely recall something along the line one was a 'carbine' sized model and the other a 'rifle' length model.

That is the famous "Marlin Jam"......just google Marlin Jam and there will be the info your friend needs to repair it, or get it repaired

Thanks for the input, how many of you marlin guys shot the new Hornady Lever ammo.
I just bought one the other day and just waiting for the scope to come in.

Thought about it but to me a pointed bullet somehow doesn't seem to go with a straight wall case. Undoubtedly it's probably a bullet design change that improves and extends the cartridge capabilities, but to my eye, it just doesn't look right. So, in my 44-40, 444 and 45-70, it's big flat nose bullets.

I have one (444p is pistol grip, 444s is straight grip) that has accounted for many deer over the years. Another friend has taken a few deer and one very large Roosevelt Elk, and assorted bears and such.

The hornady 265 is the bullet to use (admittedly I have not used the lever-evolution), and stay away from Remington's anemic 240 grain loading - useless!

I have been tempted to try some 300 grain + loads, but I doubt they would be all that much more effective then the 265.

Great gun, great fun.

If they are micro-groove rifling, I'd give it a miss and get a 45/70 instead. If they are cut rifled, like the 45/70, go for it...IMHO

That would make sence, but mine, as pictured in post #5, is stamped 444S yet has a pistol grip butt stock and matching lever.

I would have to disagree. Of the two I had, the microgroove was more accurate with the most varietey of bullets. I ended up selling it and keeping the ballard one because I want to concentrate on cast bullet with this one. Although some swear that the microgroove will shoot cast bullet just as good as the ballard.

Would like to get her out and sight it in, question this is my first big bore. What would you sight it in at 0, I was thinking 100 yards.
hope this makes sense to gun guys
