Yeah we all know that you take whatever you hear from someone in a gunshop with a grain of salt.

Went into the local gunshop today and this was the conversation with the guy behind the counter:

Me: "What do you suggest in the way for .45 ACP for a 1911?"
Clerk: "Whatever you can get."
Me: "What do you mean?"
Clerk: "There is a shortage of .45 ACP ammunition right now."
Me: "A shortage?!"
Clerk: "Yes."
Me: "Forgot to place an order?"
Clerk: "No it's just hard to get right now for everyone."
Me: "Do you have anything in stock?"
Clerk: "I think we might have something."

*at this point he asks the owner if they have any in stock and the owner points to two boxes on the shelf*

Clerk: "This says .45 Auto, is that the same stuff?"
Owner & Me: "Yes."
Owner: "ACP stands for Auto Colt Pistol."
Me: "So what is it and how much?"
Clerk: "Fiocchi .45 Auto Hollow Points. $34 a box."
Me: "Well if that's all you got I'll take it."

So I didn't even know there was a .45 ACP shortage until today. I should go to town more sooner :D

I don't seem to have any issues getting the stuff.
I have at least 4000 rounds in my safe at home :p
Seems like the people at gun stores are becoming the generic sales guy rather than a gun guy. I will not buy any product from someone based on there recommendations if they show any sign of not knowing what they are selling.

Ill see if my local places have any and shoot you a PM. I'm sure they will ship you some at a decent rate.

No worries Tim, the next city over has two gunstores and both have .45 ACP in stock, just need a reason for the 3 hour drive :p

I also have about 200 I think or so that need to be loaded but I need reloading equipment, powder, and primers before that can happen :D

So the clerk isn't sure what it is but knows it's in short supply. Brilliant! With that type of common sense I'm guessing he may worked for the previous government. I've not heard of a shortage, at least in my part of the country.

Wow. No shortage where I live (and $34 a box???) take the long drive next time, you should save enough on the ammo to cover the gas cost, the same ammo is about $27 here. Or get into reloading as soon as possible, that way you can stop counting rounds and start counting cans, as in 'I shot a full can of 45 this week' (I transport ammo to the range in those red plastic coffee cans)

So why did the other guy say the clerk didn't know what ACP stands for?

Because he didn't.

The clerk looked at a box of ammo labeled ".45 AUTO" and he didn't know if that was the same as .45 ACP. He had to ask his boss if it was the same to whit the boss replied "ACP stands for auto colt pistol".

Just a quick note.
Well ammo supply is fairly good right now, ammo bookings at this year's Shot Show were up in large volume and that is coming from all the US manufacturers. We (I work in the hunting/firearm wholesale business) have already been alerted to a possible ammo slow down (reduced fill rates) for us in Canada. Please know this is not a ploy to drum up sales for my accounts but having a couple of extra boxes of your favorite ammo around if you can get now at a decent price is probably not a bad idea.

Always a good idea, just look at .22 LR prices. Still the best deal going, but a little hard to take $10 price increases for a brick...

Yeah it's been happening for the last year.
