Shotgun Ammo Legality and Availability

Hello CGN,

I was reading through a recent online article, and it lists several kinds of ammo I'd love to shoot off at the range for fun/use for hunting. Also I am looking for bird bomb shells in case of needing to scare off bears or other predators in the great forests of northern Canada. (I was thinking bird bomb followed by 000 buck incase of an emergency, life-threatening only)

The thing is, I don't know the restrictions and availability of these rounds, how can one aquire some? I have not seen them for sale at Canadian Tire or LeBarons' ::rolleyes:

1. Buck and Ball
2. Rubber shot, rubber slugs
3. Ferret rounds
4. Bird bombs
5. Dragon's breath shells
6. Flechette darts
7. The one I really want to try = Strung ball

Is this the "bolo" round?

IIRC, it is also banned.
 
Ok, more specifically:

1. The Strung Ball is not the same as a bolo round, what it is are shot pellets strung together on a wire, so that when fired, they spread out no more than 4 inches or so, for long range, yet effective, shooting.

2. Flechettes are a no go, I didn't expect them to be legal.

3. Can someone put up a link to the Ncra page I need to be looking at? (Not all that sure what I need to see for legalities)

4. Sources for the ammo are welcome! Southwestern Ontario locations prefered

While we are on the subject of ammo, what is it about flechette's that caused them to be put on the prohibited list? Has anyone ever seen an explanation (or excuse) or is it simply more Lib fear mongering? Not that I particularly care beyond being unneccessarily restricted, but they really don't seem any more offensive than any other type of ammo. It all goes bang and stuff shoots out of the muzzle when you pull the trigger....

Flechettes have a very small cross section, but have alot of weight behind them (long,thin steel darts) . They penetrate just about anything including kevlar. With almost no shock on impact they aren't really an effecive hunting round, there more for cripling things like snipers hidding in the thick. I'd like to try some too. :)
 
I can't help but laugh at some of this exotic ammo. Who the hell needs 2 balls tied together with a string...flying out of a 12 ga.? Isn't dead with a slug or buckshot good enough? What exactly are they trying to stop....an elephant on crack?

So it's more Lib fear mongering. Banned because they MIGHT someday, somewhere be misused. They sure managed to remove a lot of fun from the world, didn't they?

I literally just completed my Pal course "woooo me" anyways. i was told only 3 types of ammo are illegal. Armor piercing, flechette and incendiaries.

Am i correct?

Former Prohibited Weapons Order, No. 10
1. Any cartridge that is capable of being discharged from a commonly available semi-automatic handgun or revolver and that is manufactured or assembled with a projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered so as to be capable of penetrating body armour, including KTW, THV and 5.7 x 28 mm P-90 cartridges.
2. Any projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered to ignite on impact, where the projectile is designed for use in or in conjunction with a cartridge and does not exceed 15 mm in diameter.
3. Any projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered so as to explode on impact, where the projectile is designed for use in or in conjunction with a cartridge and does not exceed 15 mm in diameter.
4. Any cartridge that is capable of being discharged from a shotgun and that contains projectiles known as “fléchettes” or any similar projectiles.

I'm no expert but I have been told that a flechette round is much more aerodynamic than most shotgun ammunition and will carry significantly farther when fired. They are stabilized by fins or venturi so behave more like multiple rifle bullets than a load of shot. Many shotgun hunters were firing them unsafely close to urban areas expecting them to fall like shot but they didn't... They are also usually steel darts that survive coming down to the ground so there may be some concern about sharp steel darts littering the woods.

They are primarily an artillery weapon used for anti-personnel. Not much used for hunting even when allowed. As an earlier poster pointed out they have been used to penetrate body armour as well.

As I stated, this is hearsay so YMMV.

Interesting, very interesting. So Flechettes are illigal, as I'm guessing, are strung ball rounds. Dragons breath doesn't ignite or explode on IMPACT but it does in the barrel? Legality? Where can one get these rounds in our great country?
