Perhaps I'm just getting old an skeptical, but I'm starting to think that there are a lot of shooters who talk better than they shoot. There is seldom a day that I go the the Range (and I go at least 200 times a year) that I don''t hear somebody talking about their "tack driver" rifle that shoots "em all into one hole at 100M" ...or... "puts 2 of 3 into a cigarette package at 800M". I know there are a lot of good shooters who take part in competitons and who do, in fact, make tight groups on paper...but at the Range where I shoot (over 2600 members last year)...I hear about more good shooting than I see! Oh, by the way, when I dug an empty cigarrete pack out of the garbage and offered to hang it up at 300M, the guy who usually shoots em at 800M didn't have that gun at the range that day. Damn, I would have liked to see that gun!

Same old story. I keep hearing about these 1/4 MOA Savageremingtonwinchesters using white box ammo, yet when I invite them out to a match no one ever shows up.

I was a top level archer and I used to hear the same thing in archery all the time. However VERY VERY VERY few every master archery.I am just getting into precision rifle shooting but I suspect it is the same.
One thing I have noticed almost immediately that like archery the equipment is probably only about 40-50% of the equation. Mental concentration is mandatory, problem solving, being honest with yourself and hopefully with proper training shooting like a machine.
Ultimately ,Shooting like a machine is one of my primary goals. I am just starting out so I think I may have a long road ahead of me but that is part of the fun.

Canuck525 you will probably find a great deal of commonality with good rifle marksmanship. I had a conversation once with a serious competitive archer, and it was amazing at just how much our two pursuits had in common. For that matter, I had a conversation with my sister, a professional bassoonist, and I was struck at how much similarity there was between my target shooting and what she did - e.g., she was well aware of Basham's book(!).

JEC be sure to take all the range stories in good humour, and try to get people out to shoot. Do take the high road and don't gloat when they don't shoot as well as they talk, hopefully they can find that shooting is even more fun than talking about it. If they take up shooting, you can have a good laugh with them in a couple of years time when they come to truly understand that their old stories of what they said they could do, can't even be done by world champion level shooters.

I have one of Basham's audio CDs.
This is the first time on CGN, I've heard anyone else mention him.
Recently I went on a business trip to Saskatchewan.
Listened to his CD at least twice on this road trip.
Good to hear others using his material.
Took the time to mention his name at a recent ISSF pistol match, and all I got was blank stares.

PS: I just carried out an advanced search, and it seems a few of us have heard of him here.

What do you mean, why just the other day I shot a one inch group at 1000 yards,

I would show you the target, but because it was so windy, the target blew away before I could get it. :p

LOL.....good one!
In all serousness, I've had the opportunity to shoot once @900 meters, during an APRA match at Homestead.
Myself I plan on doing it again certainly. But with my palma rifle in 308, I'd be very happy if I managed a 36 inch "group."

There is nothing wrong with that at all. Especially on the days with s wind.

Better to put what you have into it and actually run a 5 hr marathon then put nothing into it, and run a 3 hr BS marathon.

Carbonrod, yes there is something very fulfilling about it, that I cannot quite put my finger on.
I had also planned to give ISSF free pistol a go as well. But I think all my energy and resources, this year, will be committed to 'high power rifle' for this coming spring/summer season.

Cheers.........

JEC, funny how we live in different parts of the country but the same guys shoot at your range as mine, they must travel a lot. A guy told me he could shoot a dime at 200yds with his 7mm mag. When I inquired about the wherabouts of the said rifle he said he didn't have it there, it was at home. To be honest I've shot some pretty good groups but at least I'm honest enough when someone asks that I don't tell them what I once did but rather what I usually do. Shoot often enough and you'd have to get in some good ones once in awhile. A good shooting friend said he wanted to hit a 6" target at 175yds with his SLUG GUN. I said I'd pay him $5 for every hit. I haven't paid him anything yet and I really wanted to see him do it. He's spent about $300 in slugs trying so it's fun. I never try to sound like a "snot" just ask what their gun can do, then ask if they can show me how they do it.

I used to get mad when I heard crap like that on the range now I just laugh and tell them an even bigger lie. Pretty soon we're both down to 1/4 minute groups at 400 yds.

LOL, I just found this site as it was suggested by a friend. I think it is the same in every sport! I've been bowhunter for many years and listened to all kinds of guys talk about 3-D shooting and how well they all could shoot at the clubs. I consider myself a good bow shot but I kept thinking that if these guys shot 1/2 as good as they said I didn't stand a chance. I got talked into going to a shoot once and won my class (bowhunter) and finished 2nd overall, the guy that won went 198 and 196 out of 200 that day. All those guys that said they shot so well didn't fare so good, maybe it was just an off day :).
I'm not a good rifle shot and I'm just getting into shooting this year although I rifle hunted for many years. I ordered my first rifle with the help of a friend who is an LE sniper, .308 Remington 700 XCR compact tactical. I bought a Leupold VX-L 4.5-14x50mm to top it off and a good set of rings and base. I plan on getting some instruction first so as not to develop bad habits. The mental side seems to be similiar. I hope to one day shoot as well as my moniker suggests but till then I'll just listen and learn.

I just came back from an ORA seminar discussing group size and the running joke was to be honestly with ones self about the group size and not compare it against the internet groups. We laughed at the honest assessement of 10 shoots being .440 but on the internet it would be .200.

I have a Lanny Bassham winning in the wind CD and have attempted to get these other books related to Mental Management
"With Winning in Mind" Lanny Bassham
"Mental Training with Shooting Success" by Richard L. Domey
"Mental Training" by Bob Hickey

Right now one of my primary interests is in regards to set-up and the different techniques( free recoil, partial hold etc etc).
Can anyone recommend some good DVDs, books etc on it( dvd would be better but may not exist)?

Some books come to mind, "Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting" & "Precision Shooting at 1000 yards."
As well, "The Ultimate in Rifle Accuracy" and for palma shooters, "Sharpshooting for Sport & War."
I mention this last title, BUT it was first published in 1900 hence it really has limited value for iron sight trigger pullers only.

It's been my experience that those who have the least to say about their accomplishments often are the most capable.

And anytime they do say something, you best listen, because what they say can save you hundreds of rounds of ammo and dozens of internet forum arguments.

Bingo. I use my spotting scope to look at the groups others are getting, usually the guys who talk the talk can't shoot for beans. The guy shooting methodically, who minds his own business, trying not to be noticed is usually the one with consistent little groups and he generally keeps it to himself. All those attention seeking super snipers should watch how he does it but they are so caught up in their own bull#### they don't even notice the real deal.

Phew!

Thank-Gawd.....I thought I must be the worst shot on the planet...I'm just happy when there's the same amount of holes on my paper as bullets I fired
