So I went to the range with my Rem. 597 today weather was nice, got off work at noon - perfect time to go shooting :) The gun was even cleaned a couple of days earlier. Everything was going just normal, until I loaded one mag and pulled the trigger and gun fired 2 or 3 times. I was shooting off the bench so it wasn't a bumpfire. I kept shooting after than but it didn't happen again and never had it before (in over 3 years). Did that happen to anyone else before??

Uhh yeah I may not want to brag about it.

In fact I would personally go to a gunsmith and have it fixed.

if you aren't in the loop about it, these boards are trolled by RCMP and other law enforcement agencies ;)

Had that happen with a Cooey 64 one day at the range. When I bought the gun the previous owner said it "didn't always work right". I loaded it up and fired a few rounds when I squeezed the trigger a little harder it unloaded the reat of the mag. I figured the guy was talking about jamming or stove pipe empty cases. It wouldn't have been a big deal, except all the members of the shooting club were standing around and saw it happen. They knew by the look on my face I didn't know that would happen.
When I took it apart I found out someone had been playing with the mechanism and filed some of the parts to make it go full auto.
I bought a new trigger assembly and took a hammer to the old one. The next time I went to the range I took it along and gave it to the president.

Sound like ethier the hammer or sear is finished. Any way dis-assemble it and get a new hammer and see if it's that before taking it in for repair.

Didn't the first 597's do this quite a bit?? I've seen a few SKS's do it occasionally too. No idea why, and never had any concerns either... just thought of it as a bonus once in awhile. :runaway:

I guess the only logical thing to do do is destroy the firearm. :jerkit:

Maybe some cheap or defective ammo? It is possible that those first few rounds were underloaded and the action didn't cycle properly.

This is how the RCMP had supposedly reclassified some guns to prohib status once upon a time... by fabricating custom underloaded ammo that would make a gun go full auto, but only if just the right amount of powder was used in the cartridge. Yeah.. not exactly "fair play".

:jerkit:

Mine would do that occasionally as well. I kept it very clean so it wasn't dirt holding the firing pin out. I though it was sort of neat, too bad I couldn't control the bursts. The gun was crap in general I sold it for less than half of what I paid.

Well the SKS would do it because most don't have a firing pin spring so it's much easier for that to get gummed up with powder residue and get stuck in the forward position, but it seems rather unlikely on the 597. I'd suspect the sear not quite catching the hammer notch properly, but given that the gun worked normally afterward it doesn't seem like a likely candidate either.

IM_Lugger, Have you stripped the 597 to inspect the trigger group after your range trip?

Fortunately (or unfortunately? :nest: ), I haven't had mine go full auto yet. Then again I haven't taken it out since I installed the VQ hammer and extractor last week.

I took the gun apart and cleaned it just BEFORE the I took it out. (I don't clean it that often)...I won't worry about it much for now but if it happens again I'll take action.
