I have a Dillon 550 press and have been debating upgrading to the 650. My budget is not the largest out there, so I am wondering how often does a used 650 come up for sale and what are they usually asking for it?

I own a 650 and would never sell it. i haven't looked through the forums for one, but i would imagine that not many people would be selling their 650's unless they were upgrading to a 1050.

650's are keepers. 550's are great as well! auto indexing is the major difference between the 550 and 650, you would need a case feeder to eliminate the manual loading of cases, and this would be the only advantage of having the 650 over the 550 (if you buy the case feeder).

do you shoot a lot? i mean, do you shoot more than 1000 - 2000/week? I think i went over kill with my press because i only shoot no more than 300-400 per week. I could easily reload what i need with a 550.

my next press will be a dillon 550 so i can have 2 presses set up for different calibers.

cheers

I have a 550 that has muliple tool heads for a variety of pistol calibers. I have a 650 with a case feeder dedicated to one caliber. It really flies!

I suspect the only way you will find a 650 is an estate sale ..... (as in "From my cold, dead fingers...")

For $US 650.00 you can get a Hornady L&L with case feeder from Cabelas. Hornady still has its free bullet offer going on but you'll wait a long long time for em. Anyhow, this could be a viable alternative if you're looking to upgrade. If you buy from Cabelas have em ship USPS. The couriers (UPS) charge a fortune and they're slower.

Regarding used 650's for sale - I've been looking for awhile here in the US and it's a rarity. I think people who own them and die take them to the grave with them; Zombies reload too, ya know.

Good luck in your search. A 650 is definately a step forward.

Maybe I'll bite the bullet and just add a case feeder to my 550. It would speed up the process some, make it easier anyways. I probably shoot around a 1000 a week, depending on the weather. I looked at the LNL but had heard about the long.................. waiting times. I still have not made my mind up on which way I wanted to go. They have gotten so blasted expensive, should have bought one when it was still 6 something. Darn hind sight.

Long waiting times? WTH are you taking about? Dillon is great and all, really, but Hornady is right up there too; and LNL AP is an equivalent of Dill-on 650.

If he is talking about the time interval between placing an order and receiving the product, he is correct. It is very long. However, to Hornady's credit, they have prioritized customer service and warranty issues so once you have your press, the lifetime warranty and service is identical to Dillon's.

*cough* P+D Enterprises, a site sponsor, has 650's in stock in Edmonton, at better prices than you might think.

At the very least, if you're in/near Edmonton you should go check 'em out.

If nearer Calgary, I hear second-hand that TSE has Dillon goodies too (dies, at least... someone in Calgary can probably tell you more than I can about their equipment selection though).

As for buying Dillon direct, I ordered a 1050 Monday the 22nd and it's waiting for me to pick it up from FedEx Sat the 27th (today). This is after Customs screwed around with it for 2 days - Dillon had it to Edmonton Wednesday evening. If customs had been 2 hours faster today, I'd have had it delivered on the 5pm rounds.

Dillon's customer service is awesome too, by the way.

I can make 500 rounds in a hour with 550 easy, all manual. Bought my first 550 in the late 80's. I sent it back last year to replace the bushings, two weeks later Dillon sent me a brand new press:eek:...now how's that for NO BS warranty.

You mean the bushings gave out after only 30 years  ??

"Cheap crap! :D"

How many different calibres do you plan on loading with the press? If it's more than two or three, I would stick with the 550, as 650 conversion kits and toolheads are quite a bit more expensive then for the 550.

If the 1000 rounds/week is mostly one calibre, and you have other guns that you shoot in lower volumes, you might want to get a 650 with case feeder and keep the 550 around for lower volume stuff.

reloading

I shoot about a 1000 rounds a week of 45. I do reload other calibers, basically 308, 30-06, .223 but I don't go through it like the 45. Now that the weather is getting better, probably will shoot more.

Yes I was talking about ordering times for the Hornady LnL, and from what I have heard some guys are still waiting for their free bullets. Has anyone added a case feeder to their 550? That was one of the other routes I was thinking about. A 1050, one can only dream. Congrats on your purchase doc, you will have to post some pictures once you get it set up.

I put a case feeder on my 550...it's OK...but not very forgiving if there's the least bit of dirt or case media on the feed mechanism. If you add one...it's a good idea to keep a small compressor handy to keep the press spotless.

I ended up getting a 1050...no looking back.

At a 1,000 round a week (mostly 45) I'd really consider getting a 1050 for the 45...and keep your 550 for the other calibers.

If you;re time is worth anything...it will pay for itself in no time. You'll do 1,000 rounds on you 1050 in under an hour...and that's not trying to beat the clock....

More time for other things...

Case feeder

I had heard that the case feeder on the 550 wasn't that easy to set up. Lots of people have added one and then gotten rid of it because it wasn't working right. Don't think I want to go that route.

Doc M: So how much did you save by ordering straight from Dillon instead of buying local at P&D?

Well, I couldn't tell you for a 650 model since I haven't ordered one of those direct.

The 1050 I wanted wasn't on the shelf at P+D (that I saw, anyway) but with what shipping and everything else cost, I can't see the savings being all that substantial.

Putting it in perspective, FedEx shipping was about $350, there was a $10.50 fee since I don't have a FedEx customer account for customs clearance (compare that to UPS, who'd probably charge hundreds in brokerage!), and the actual GST was something like $120.

It would be significantly less for a 650, since it's a smaller machine/setup, but it's still worth bearing in mind.

Phil of P+D is a member here, and I'm sure he can answer all the pricing questions on their full Dillon lineup. I know if I were to buy a 650, the pricing I saw at P+D wasn't at all out of order.

Pics on page 2, as in the link; short video on page 1.

I'm working on getting a proper video of the actual full-on operation now that I sorted out a small gremlin with the case infeed system at station 1 - I loaded up a bunch of .308 last night just as fast as I could pull the handle! I'm talking just under 200 rounds (all the brass I had prepped) in about 12 minutes. THAT is ###y, let me tell you...

I wouldn't recommend a case feeder for the 550...I wasn't impressed with mine...
