I am looking at getting an SKS to knock some targets off with. I am just wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between the Russian SKS and Chinese SKS? (yes I am a noob)

Thanks
Jeff

There will possibly be a difference in fit and finish, depending on year of manufacture and factory of origin and typically the Russian guns, especially the laminates will have stronger stocks. Chinese guns are all chrome-lined bores which last longer and resist corrosion. All the 1952 and later russian guns are also chrome-lined. Earlier ones are not and are therefore slightly less desirable from a shooting perspective, but are sometimes more collectible.

For the average shooter who does not plan to alter the rifle and wants to shoot a whackjob of ammo, either will perform admirably.

You can't go wrong with either one. Find the best deal out there and go for it.
Prices are starting to come down $160.00 to $200.00. There is also rifle and ammo deals out there.

Shooter wise, I'd just pick one that you like the look of best.
I like the look of the russian ones better, but none where around as cheap as now so I bought a chinese one.

Norinco = chromed barrel
Russian = history

Conclusion= Norinco
my 2 cents

My 53 Russian has a chrome barrel and it shoots better than my Chinese, but not by too much. The Chinese "made for consumer export" is less quality than the Russian military issued rifles that we see on the market today. The Chinese military issued rifles are also good quality, but we see less of them on the market as of yet. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have been checking out deals on the SK's for the last couple months and found this at Le Baron for $185
Russian Simonov SKS
Semi–Auto Rifle – 7.62x39
• Hardwood stock • Silver bolt
• Refinished to excellent condition
• Comes with sling and accessories

But the listing doesnt have the date of the rifle, I will of course ask that info before laying the money down.

Simple matter: I tested Yougos, Norcs, Simonovs. All things considered, Norincos are a little more accurate. Russian triggers tend to be nicer though. I did a trigger job on my Norinco, wew! Muuuuuch nicer!

If its Russian, it will date between 49 and 56. They really all do what they were designed to do. I'd say anything under 300 bucks is a good deal if its in good shape and you get to handle it before you buy it.

ALL Chinese SKS's are either military issue or made up from military issue parts for commercial sale.

ALL Russian SKS's made from early 1952 and later are/were chrome lined. Only early Russian and all Yugo SKS's are not chrome lined.

Individual rifles will shoot better than others. On the whole, Russian rifles are often better fit and finished IF NOT REFURBED. Refurbed rifles had mixed and matched parts. They function, but fit and finish might not be as good as new.

I've shot many Chinese and Russian SKS rifles. Neither was better than the other on the firing line ON AVERAGE. Individual rifles sometimes outperform others from the same manufacturer - that much is luck of the draw and can only be determined on the firing line.

Not totally correct on Russian refurbs. There are many levels of refurbishment with Russian SKSs. They run the gamut of:
New rifles that only had a stock swap
Rifles that have been phosphated during refurb
Painted rifles
Rifles made from forced parts
Rifles made from mis-matched parts.

Not in my experience. You show me a refurb with all original matching parts - I'll be you cannot.

This is because the gas tubes and pistons were not kept with the rifles during the Russina refurb process. You can always make out the faint traces of the previous S/N electro-pencil blued over. (or painted over)

Curious,does your list order have any significance? Higher on the list, higher the "quality"?
