I am thinking of adding a 22-250 to my small collection and would like to know peoples opinion's. As of now I have a Savage .17hmr, Tikka T3 .223, Ruger 10/22. I would like to stay small calibers as I don't do much more than shhot Coyote's. Is it worth getting a 22-250 in a Rem 700 VTR or not????? I know and have researched the 22-250 and know is has the longer range knocking down power over the .223rem. I do however reload .223 and wouldn't be that big of a deal to reload this also, and that is what I am thinking.

Any guys have any opinion's to make my decision solid before spending that much money??

Thanks

I have a collection of about 15 rifles and 4 hand guns...

A 22-250 is on the list to acquire and I cant wait

Get it

I reload for many more calibers. I finally got around to getting a 22-250 in a Win M70 SS sporter synthetic with a ported barrel. The rifle recoils less than a 22LR with the barrel porting, you can actually see your shots hitting paper, or anything else. I'm not sure if the VTR recoils the same way but you get the idea. I would get one again if I had too.

Easy & cheap to load. A little harder to find the faster twists that allow the heavier bullets, 14" being the average. Savage does make theirs with a 12" twist which should be good for bullets in the 60-70 gr range.

cool

if you already have a 223...get a 243....

X2
Why stick with .22 when there is some but not a huge difference. Go to .243 and really reach out and if you ever decide to deer hunt you can easily do that also. No harder to reload than a .22-250 and a large variety of bullet weights available.

3 of my favourite rifles have been 223 wssm...220 swift (same thing:redface:)
and 22-250 in the varmint category...

What you need to ask yourself is how much you will use it...

Myself,..I didn't use them half as much as I anticipated I would...

So I stuck with one, sold the others and instead of buying another rifle, I put the money towards top of the line optics...

I could care less what anyone uses for optics, and I have certainly used my share of lower end...

but I would rather a $1000 rifle with a $1000 scope, than two similar calibre, $1000 rifles with lesser scopes...

Is it worth it? That depends on how much time and effort it costs you to get the money to buy the 22-250 and how much good you could do yourself by spending that money on something else. Buy it, try it, like it or don't, keep it or sell/trade it for something else.

I wouldn't have both a .223 and a 22-250 because for what they cost me and the space they take up there is too much overlap in their roles, but that's my reasons. If you have enough money and space and can shoot them enough to feel it's worthwhile, you should buy two of each and paint them in different camouflage colours for different seasons.

I wouldn't get a .22-250 if I had a .223 and a .22LR, 17HMR. Not to say that it isn't useful but considering that it doesn't share much compatibility with .223 (less the bullets) you might as well get something totally different. I would say jump up to a .308 Win. You can still use it shoot coyotes, the bullet selection is huge, and you it consumes similar amounts of powder/primers. I don't hate the .22-250 and think it is a great caliber but you are get still just getting another 22 albeit with longer range. Considering what your collection has right now a .308 opens more options (LR shooting, hunting). Just my 2 cents.

buy the 22 varminter then sell the .223

One of the selling points for me was the I can use my regular rifle primers for the 22-250 and use my regular primer cup in my ram prime. Ive accumulated so much kit/ components that Im trying to keep it simple now.

I have the "small" 22 CFs hornet, 222, & 223, I sold the 22-250 & swift and kept the 243. The 243 is now my coyote gun for most shooting. Calling I use the 223. You reload so I would go 243. Just my $.02, AJ
