What do you guys think of it ever coming back in Ontario?

This has been on the back of my mind the last few days. Seeing how strong we are as hunters and fighting for our rights, why cant we all lobby together here and try and get the spring bear hunt back?

I must admit, I am not as smart as some when it comes to politics as a few awesome people on here are. Would a bill need to be presented in this case? a mass petition? what?

After all, the LGR was a big liberal mistake, and as a community we are fighting to have that changed, so why not try and get the spring bear hunt in Ontario back as well?

I guess it is just wishful thinking on my part. Thoughts?

Once common sense prevails the hunt will be back on, so don't hold your breath. We need a rural raised politician in there that knows how things work outside of Toronto.( Mike Harris should have known better but he screwed up) Unfortunately I think it will take a few maulings and a bears status being reduced to nuisance animal before the people at Queens Park smarten up. The problems I see standing out are the MNR being in denial about the surge in population of bears after the cancellation, it's not a Toronto issue so who cares, and the fact that politicians have let the anti's walk all over them with threats. The main reason for cancelling the hunt was because some anti claimed too many cubs were being orphaned yet now it is ten times worse with municipalities shooting nuisance bears all the time. The City of Timmins shot and dumped over 30 bears last year but nobody at the MNR wants to admit something needs to be done, they just come up with band aid solutions like the bear hotline to make it look like they are addressing the issue. A few years ago I hunted moose in wmu 19 and our outfitter told us about talking to a biologist who was studying bear scat in the area and the biologist expressed concern about how much calf moose hair was in the scat so the MNR cut the number of moose tags, that showed me how instead of fixing the real problem they just found other ways to deal with it. I don't understand why no one in government can admit this is a mistake.

Thanks for your info waltman, shocked this thread has not gotten more feedback from others.

I don't live to far from Timmins, so I totally know what you are talking about there. We had it bad the other year with bears, they we're walking down out town streets, going into resturant dumpsters, peoples backyards ripping apart screen doors etc.

Clearly there is a problem, and has been that way for a while up this way. Many bears we're shot by the OPP last year, one right across the road from me actually.

I believe one day we will get the spring hunt back, and you are right, unfortunately it will likely take a few deaths by bear attacks to wake up the sheeple anti leaf lickers, or when the population gets so bad that they start heading down that way, which I have read reports that this is actually starting to happen.

Dollars not sense

I preach this every spring when our local bee hives get hit by bears.... The solar electric fence doesn't do the trick, and there are too many of them to feed naturally. They are coming closer and closer to our hives now, and I am certain there is way more bear scat around these days.

Once the MNR realizes how much they fork out in bear insurance compensation each year to the apiarists, they might start sending reports to the politico's about reinstating it.

The only way that they will bring it back is if they can make more from the tags than they will lose from anti-lobbyists and insurance....

My 2 cents.

We need the Conservatives to get back in for this one. Randy Hillier will push for the spring hunt if they do...

BRING BACK THE SPRING BEAR HUNT!!! It's been...what....at least 10 years since they cancelled it? The time will come. Be patient. I guess the government will eventually consider bringing it back once one of there family members gets up close and personal to a bear while thet are having a good time at the cottage!!!

"...Harris should have known better but..." He knuckled under to the anti-hunting lobbyists. The OFAH did nothing, as usual.

Isn't going to happen even if teh conservatives get in to power. The Shad foundation which is the reson it closed in the first place is just to powerful and the politicians won't mess with them.

I don't think it is a priority for any politician.

Best chance would be a majority Conservative gov't in the province, but that doesn't seem like it is going to happen, and even then probably not.

I was just a young lad when they cancelled the spring bear hunt. I never even got a chance to go after one of the buggers legally in the spring. All i can say is that i live in a small town about an hour away from Timmins and the bears are ALREADY a nuissance animal around here. Like some of you guys already said, they are comming into towns, walkling down the middle of streets, coming into peoples yards to rip apart garbage and also to rip apart peoples fruit trees. All this stuff happens on a regular basis around here.

What i believe will eventually happen is that people will get so fed up with all these bears that they will have to shoot them and drop them off on the front steps of the local MNR building. Now don't get me wrong, I AM IN NO WAY ADVOCATING THIS!!!! But something drastic is going to have to happen to get this law changed.

Farmers around here can shoot them as pests and i know of one individual a few years back that shot a total of 23 bears on his farm. That's not counting the people he had acting as agents on his behalf shooting them on his farm. This is a yearly type of occurence around here.

I personally think we have to deal with getting C-391 passed first but after it is all said and done, no matter which way the vote goes, us ontarians need this bear problem to be dealt with next. I don't even go blueberry picking or fishing without a rifle anymore because of this stupid law.

You live pretty close to me, I am in the Kirkand Lake area.

I really doubt it would happen. The tree huggers are strong and the government seems to want to turn Northern Ontario into somekind of a park. The last stupidity is to decrease or stop logging north of Highway 11 to protect the endangered Woodland Caribou...just unbelievable. I cant Believe McSquinty keeps getting voted back in......hopefully the HST was the last straw.

Exactly. All the tree huggers look at the poor little cubs and moma bear as if they were some kind of Disney character. Just wait until yogi comes through the door at Dalton's cottage looking for a snack and his wife starts to freak. That'll be the end of it right there.

Right on, I think Pathfinder, you and I should get together for a shoot one day. We can't let those boys in the south have all the fun now can we? PM me if you guys are up for it.

And yes the provincial government is consistent in its intent to make the north one big playgroud. The sh*tty part is that, well...there's not too many of us up here. No votes = No say in things. Don't ya just love it? :D
