30-06 enough for moose?

hehehe!!!

I only said that because a fellow i once met was describing his fathers guns that he was about to inherit.

One was a vz24 mauser, 8x57, and he said: "its too powerful for hunting though, my dad shot a deer with it and the bullet went right through!"b:

Chiming in with my two cents, if you can't drop a mature bull moose dead at 300 yards with a .30-06, it isn't the gun that's the problem!

Once I started handloading for .30-06 with 180gr TSX and Reloader 22, I started seeing REAL performance. 2800fps+ out of a 24" M700 barrel still 2 tenths below MAX, it's a sledgehammer load and wonderfully accurate. I took a decent cow with it about three years ago at a lasered 287 yards and achieved complete penetration. She reared and went about 10 steps before piling up.

I'd use that on elk or bear in a heartbeat.

I think the responses have already given you the answer, but I think this is what Klunk uses:

I own 2 rifles. Rifle 1 is a .300 win mag Tikka m695. The other is a Parker hale Super safari 30-06. Guess which one I am taking moose hunting in November? ;)

We load 220gr partitions @ 2500fps with IMR 4064 for moose in an iron sights blr 30-06.
Works for us; nothing over 100yds where we hunt.

Just be aware unless you shoot it in the shoulder it's not going to drop right away, despite what lot's of people say. A good boiler room shot from 60 yds and it won't even flinch. Gotta learn to be patient.
They may not be armour plated, but they most definitely are tough critters.

took a moose last season with 180grn federal premium stuff in my 30-06, never did recover the bullet but it sure did a number to the moose!

"I get the picture" LOL I knew I was giving him good advice, but I had to confirm with our knowledgeable members. For those interested, my friend is keeping his BAR in 30 06, not buying another rifle, but upgrading his scope Thanks to all who took the time to post their opinions.

It depends, I hit one in the heart and it obviously dropped in it's tracks. 30-06 180g BTW but I work with a guy who's shot several moose and deer witht he same rifle, a .243. he says it's all placement, but IMO he's gone a bit too far. hard to argue his clean kills though, he won';t listen when I talk about what "could" and likely will eventually happen...

If things keep going like this, the day will come when the shooting rags will be saying that the 50 BMG is not enough gun for most game animals.

I know what you mean... I used to use my 50 for moose and elk but now I feel I owe it to the animals I hunt to kill them cleanly so I switched to 30mm. Now I am confident they die quickly and painlessly and I no longer have to gut them either so it's win-win!
