.416 guys step up...

Hey you big bore fans, I too was hooked in my early 20's when my buddy picked up a mark 5 .378 and I had to have one too. I found a brno 602 that was converted to a .378 wby (by a gunsmith in africa stamped on the barrel for the previous owner) at a gun show 20 some years ago. What a rush when you connect with any Alberta big game. We are now older and both still own our .378 wbys, but he now shoots a .264 win mag and I shoot a 7mm STW. We still have our .378's sitting in the safe, but when we are out there dropping moose, we always think back to those quick kills we ALWAYS HAD when we were poking them with the big lead. Our shoulder's would always be bruised after getting our scopes in order, but when we went out killin, you could miss the the boiler room on any animal and it did'nt really matter (He or she was going down). I will be drawn for Moose this year and am thinking very positive about getting the old .378 back in action. If you have not sat down on the bench with one or killed critters with one then YOU are missing out.

Here is my ZKK-602, just received it from the gunsmith today. Man am I stoked to get this bad boy to the range and then after some black bears!! :runaway:

I've told this umpteen times, but here's the info; it's a Brno ZKK-602, which the CZ-550 has replaced. This rifle is a 1989 production model made the year after Remington brought out the .416RM. This gun was originally chambered in .375H&H and the original owner bored it out to .416 and had the chamber reamed to .416RM.

Before I got the mods done, the rifle weighed in at about 9.5 lbs, without scope or bullets. I weighed it and I get pretty much 9.0 lbs even. After I throw the scope on and fill the magazine it'll check in around 10.5 lbs. Perfect!

I have a Leopold Vari-X III 1.5-6X that is going on here, in a set of Warne rings.

Okay the details on the mods; David Henry did the work. Fabulous job, no surprise. I love the guys attention to detail!

The barrel was shortened from 25.5" to 23.5". I was getting a barrel band installed so thought, What the hell, knock 2" off...

The barrel band is a Talley...

The stock is a McMillan CZ Express, in dark grey with brown and light grey striping molded in. It's got a Pachmyr Decellerator recoil pad.

David cut the barrel, installed the barrel band, inletted the stock, full-length glass bedded the barrel & action. Then he re-crowned the muzzle and had to turn the barrel end to re-install the factory front sight.

I hope these pics do it justice, I'm not much of a photog'.

416s..!!

Have had several 416 Rigbys, a couple 416 Wbys, and currently have a MK V in 416, a ruger in 416 Rigby and one in 416 Ruger. Have hunted with the Rigby and Wby. Most notable events were two moose shot broadside with the Wby, using a 325 gr Barnes 'X' at 3000 FPS. Left entry holes I could stick my fist into!! Fortunately shot through the ribs and boiler room.

Have shot the 416 Rem, but never owned one..figure it won't do anything not covered by the other 3!

IMO the 416 has a much bigger 'hammer factor' than anything in a comparable sized .375 cal at any equivalent range, but for real 'close up fun' something above .45 cal works better (like a .577, 750 grainer @ 2600fps)

Got the scope mounted on my ZKK-602, obviously not sighted in yet...

Here's what she used to look like, with the factory stock and improvised 'barrel band'. :)
That's when I had the screwed up Lynx(?) rings.

This is gonna be one bad ass moose & bear rifle!! :runaway:

Demonical,
When I was looking at the pictures of your rifle I thought "stock looks good, wonder how big the pistol grip is around, hey he swapped the rings"

Yeah, remember? You steered me straight there! Bought Warne rings after you pointed out the 'obvious' to me! :p

I'm heading out for black bear May 28th and this rifle is making the trip!! :dancingbanana:

Geez Mike, you are a sour lookin' bugger!

I blame the photographer. Not two minutes before that I was jumping around playing air guitar on my rifle. Timing is everything in pictures, and they really shouldn't snap the picture 2 seconds after they say "You shot it, you clean it".

I thought maybe they told you that you had to eat the whole damned thing in one sitting!

Some nice lookin pics of rifles there guys, keep em coming..:) An if my next deal works out the way it is supposed to I have a #1 in .416 rigby coming..:D

Since some guys are talkin about 45 cal rifles in here...Hey MTM does this look familiar??

I picked this one up from MTM..its the infamous #1 in .460 WBY that lots of guys have owned in here...Right now I am getting just about 2700fps with a remington 405 grain slug. 1.5 inch groups at 100 yds,off the bench. An even with the brake and porting it definately gets your attention when you touch it off!!!

Yes even with the brake and tripple Magna Porting that thing is for nutbars only. Factory 460s kick way less. Those No.1 stocks just aren't recoil friendly. Icehunter thinks it's a 308 so it's found a good home. Hey D I can only assume the Rigby will be your Crow gun?
