What is the best combo of Chokes for a multi-purpose double? To be used for short range waterfowl, upland and sporting clays etc. What combo of chokes do you use? I am set on buying a double or two and will probably try and save a few dollars by buying an older fixed choked gun.

If it's a 12, I'd go even more open, say Skeet and IC. You can tighten up the patterns by tailoring the shotshell (high antimony, copper plated, buffered, etc.). Should also work great for waterfowl over decoys.

In an as-is factory gun, IC & Mod.
If customizing, I'd consider having my 'smith opening a mod/full gun to skeet and improved modified. More versatile, but only if it's a double trigger gun. If it is a single trigger double, the selector will seldom be used, and IC /IC would serve most purposes well.

For the 12, to be reasonable for all the applications listed I like about .007(tightish skeet?) bottom bbl and .012ish(btw IC / LM) on the top bbl. This should keep you from making a seive out of a ruffie, decent pattern range for sharptails using 7 1/2 / 6's , let you slip in the odd non- bb steel load for decoyed quackers and not handicap you on most all sporting targets.

choke/double

For hunting in NB, grouse/woodcock/pheasants/duck with doubles Ichoke all my doubles skeet 1 and skeet 2. Skeet 2 works out to be slightly tighter than IC. This combo kills the hell out of birds and clays.
Cheers/luck

The Trulock Precision Hunter chokes in my 20 gauge haven't been changed out in 2 years - they are actually SKT2 IITC.
My 28's are all open chokes as well.
I could do it all with IC/MOD chokes with no problem in all my shotguns.
I have used the spreader wads available from BPI, and they open the pattern by about 1 choke setting.

My buddy uses a 1100 with a Polychoke and it's set at IC - he only uses it for waterfowl with steel shot.

My First Double Came home Friday, it's a plain BRNO/CZ SXS with fixed Full and Modified, It will be headed to the Smith in the next little while to have the full opened to Improved cylinder.

FWIW, I shot skeet better today with my f/m chokes in my 28 than the cyl/impcyl !!
That is because I had 2 rounds of wobble trap and two rounds of skeet before I changed to the open chokes!
My shoulder and arm were gonzo by the time I switched, so missing with the open chokes would have resulted in misses with the tight chokes.
if you stop swinging, it doesn't matter if you are shooting a 10 guage, you're gonna miss!
However, the open chokes work better with steel shot.....

Cat this gun will primarily be used on pheasants and decoying waterfowl. I guarantee it will shoot very few rounds if any of skeet, however I have already put 250 rounds through it at sporting clays and I miss the I.C. choke of my Browning.

A guy could do a LOT worse than impcy/mod chokes!:dancingbanana:
IMO those two are the most versatile chokes( I tjink I already said that??)

Raising this thread from the Grave.
I picked up an nice Franchi last week, choked Skeet 1 and Skeet 2, this is to my mind the perfect choke combo. I shot pheasants and woodcock over a great pointer Saturday and killed a limit of Canadas with it Sunday.

What is the actual constriction of Skeet 2 I have been told light modified or a tight inproved cylinder, either way this gun is deadly in my hands, I think I fired 12 shots to kill 9 birds, the pair of woodcock required on two shots in total.

IC and LM is what I currently use. (sharpies and ruffed grouse) It has proven to be a good combination.
I would love to pattern a skeet choke against a IC to see the difference on paper.
