Peoples obssesion with Leupold Rifle Scopes

I use and have used many different brands of scopes over the years from Tasco to Swaro, but when it comes to buying a new one my first choice is Leupold. I've never had to return one, but then again, I've never had to return a Bushnell. I like their features, quality, and they're made right here, and that in itself is enough for me.

I am a big fan of bushnell, have a bunch of their stuff and have only ever had one problem and their customer service and warranty handling was second to none. Having said that I got the opportunity to get behind a Leupold scope recently at 400 meters and wow.....I can see why they are more money the clarity in the glass is awesome. I really like Bushnell but if I was gonna lay down cheddar for a precision scope I would go Leupold.

I have yet to find any bushnell have the clarity and actual zoom settings like my VX3 8.5-25x50. I had a 6500 bushnell with a 25 power top end. Mounted it and took to the range. On full power it had less actual zoom than an old 16 power weaver. I took it back that day and bought my Leupold.

I wouldn't consider optical quality to be the most important criteria in evaluating a rifle scope. First would be durability, second would be predictable, repeatable adjustments, and glass quality would be third. A scope with the best glass available is useless if it can't hold zero.

The reason that Leupolds are so commonly recommended is that they have a good reputation for durability.
I have a few Leupolds that I really like for hunting.
But, for repeatability in scope adjustments, the Weaver T-10 Microtrac is tops.
But it's on a range rifle (22 LR bolt action) for a good reason. I will not be using it (The old steel Weaver) near last light, with a nice deer in my scopeview.

I bought a Mark 4 6.5-20x50 from a friend. It originally had a tiny speck of dust on the inside of the objective lense. You could hardly see it. It wassent away for warranty to Okatoks. Apparently Leupold doesn't service the Mark 4 scopes in Canada. Imagine what I felt when I heard that. Yeah, much better, cause they just replace them with a brand new one. That's right.(something about the facilities they have here for repair, not up to snuff)

The scope I got back was brand new, not a scratch on it, still sealed, with the jizz rag and all. Zero cost to me.

When they say Lifetime Unlimited Transferable Warranty, they do mean it and will take care of you.

I dropped a 20 year old Vari-X II out of a tree stand and smashed the glass and crosshairs. I sent it back to Leupold, they rebuilt, re-sealed and sent it back to me. They charged me $11.00 shipping to fix something that was totally my fault,

I will never hunt with anything else,

There isn't another riflescope company out there that would have done that.

Patrick

Almost the same story here. First scope I ever bought. A used leupold. Out hard using it, and I broke it. Totally my fault, and I told them that when I sent it in. They sent it back with an itemized list of what they changed, which was basically everything but the serial number, and charged me about 2 beer in shipping.

That was many moons ago, but I still use the scope.

geez, i read thru your post and started to wonder if you were a lottery winner what with all that euro glass, then i see your from fort mac and that explains it

I don't smoke,I don't gamble, and I drink very little, but I do have a vice, that being an addiction to high quality firearms and optics.I have to laugh when someone comments on how much I spend on firearms or optics, as they smoke away,or talk about how much they spent in the bar drinking and playing the VLTs.I happen to enjoy shooting a nice rifle with great glass more than wasting thousands of dollars ruining my lungs,or feeding money into a VLT.

I'll quit likeing them when they quit doing what they were bought to do. I can afford any scope.

Lol.
That sounds like an answer from someone who owns a Corvette

I an afford any car (Ferrari) but I bought the Vette because it KICKS A$$!!!!! :kickInTheNuts:

As for your Leupold...
My old Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical got me out to 1300 yds. So what's my point? I scrapped it for a Nightforce and have never looked back, nor will I ever. Sure, one could argue that Leupold is better than Bushnell, but then again, Ferrari is also better than Lamborghini

That's exactly what I tell people when they ask why I "waste" so much money on "stupid gun stuff". Right on man!

And another reason I love the VX-III's and VX-3's? They have that ###Y gold ring you can see from a ways off! I know some of you were thinking it too so I said it.;)

I have owned about 8 Leupolds, various generations. The only one that ever needed repair was a 20 year old Vari-X II which I dropped out of a tree stand. They rebuilt and re-sealed it, sent it back to me and charged $11.00 shipping. That kind of service is outstanding, especially for something that was completely my fault. It made me a Leupold customer for life,

Patrick

Thanks. All the details make a personal endorsement worth a lot more. I'd be inclined to stick with them after experience like that.

Also Leopold has one of the best service warranty depots right here in Canada and are quick and ussually they don't charge a cent! The only problem with European scopes is warranty services! this can take months to get it fixed and returned, if you don't want to spend the $$$ buy a Redfield .they are built and warranteed at Leuopold Service centre in Canada for Life!!!I am an owner of top quality scopes and own 9 of all differrent types of Leopolds in the last 18 years and have not had a problem with any of them, I think that says it all, Dale in T-Bay

So do you own the Corvette or the Ferrari?

Good move on dumping the bushnell T. Mine never hung around long enough to bother doing a drop chart because I couldn't stand looking through it.
The Nightforce are nice enough, my buddy and I speculate on when he will get his back while shooting our Mark 4s.:p Hardnosed bargaining can make the prices of those two overlap, so it's hardly a price issue. I'll likely pick one up, largely depending on when and whether he ever sees his again.

Stopped buying Leupolds when they went to the friction turret system. The old slot metal on metal system was very durable but much more difficult to manufacture. Wish they would put more money into there product instead of there warranty service department. I had a bad experiance and will never buy a leupold again.

Friction adjustments are only on the Rifleman and VX-I, all others are click adjustment. The friction adjustment have be used for years on the old Vari-X II's (that became the VX-I). Phil.

Yes Phil my bad I didnt mean Friction Ajustment. I mean the newer turret system with the plastic adjuster and brass ring on the bottom. Mine kept popping out under recoil and the whole erector system fell out. Sent it to warranty twice. Sold it bought a Khales.
