I'm with you on the extra 8% but I think Questar is the importer as well.
Hi Mark,
The July 1st thing for the HST, this doesn't affect anyone in Ontario anyway right? Up until the end of June we pay PST and GST equal to 13%, after July 1st we pay HST equal to 13%. If someone in Ontario buys a product from a province that does NOT have the HST, are you saying that supplier is required to collect money (8%) and hand it over to Ontario? Or are you saying that because you are in Ontario, that YOU must charge the HST to any customer regardless of where they are. Also, I guess this is going to put the cost up to all provinces that don't have the HST, since the stores are going to have to pay an extra 8% fixed cost that they can't recoup as in Retail usually the retailer is provincial sales tax exempt, and just collects it on the final sale for remittance to the province. Is the HST a cumulative tax like the GST? So since retailers will be paying you the HST on their cost price, will they only be responsible to remit the tax on the difference between cost and selling price? Or will the HST be an 8% addition to cost to the consumer? I realize that the HST will apply to things where the GST was once only charged but just wondering how it will affect final price on things that have always been subject to GST and PST.
No effect on goods which were previously subject to both taxes.
Products purchased from another province will only be subject to HST if that province is a participating province. (Ie, you can still purchase stuff from Alberta and pay only GST, I think).
Along with the new HST system comes much more intense/complicated place of supply rules. Anything sourced in Ontario will be subject to HST, whether or not it is sold in Ontario.
This is my understanding, though I don't specialize in commodity tax.
