Tell us what you really think Greentips
You know, I think the Masada is an awesome concept, with some solid band-aid engineering behind it. I think the fail comes in replacing a 5.56x45 with another 5.56x45. We all know 5.56 has gone through a myriad of changes and appears set to continue to do so. This is because (IMHO) the round is too light for what the infantry calls for today. 6.8SPC is in the same category, win for 6.8, fail for utilizing the same cartridge. While I understand the cost savings for using similar components (STANAG, 5.56 Brass, etc..) I think it's a near sighted decision to not adopt the best performance for the need.
You know what I'm saying? Take those $100k+ ballistic radars, the team of physicists, computer modelling, past knowledge and build/utilize the caliber of the future. Similar to what they are doing with the .416, but at an even grander (ie. government financed) scale.
I'll never understand government, trying to save a couple bucks, while putting lives on the line and spending a paltry $500 or 600 billion in the process.
I think the 6.5 Grendel is the best balance (without those physicists and ballistic radars to confirm). I think the case needs to be reworked, but the bullet itself is probably close to perfect. Give me the mathematically perfect case with the mathematically perfect bullet, fire those from a simple, lightweight rifle and there's win.
The rest of this; Masada/ACR, SCAR, M4orgery's are bandaids for what is really required.
Still, if/when I am able to buy the Masada/ACR, I will do so anyeay. It's not like I should ever have to carry it into combat. If I did? I'll be taking my 7.62's+ and scavenging what the dead leave behind.
