Brand new S&W 629-6 Classic - 6.5"

I always wanted to have something like Dirty Harry's gun. :)

EDIT: Fired new toy today. Reloaded cast 240gr - 50rds of special loads and 50rds of mangum (no way can I handle more than 50rds per visit) Holy #*@. I LIKE, I LIKE! But I need advice on why I only see puny flames with 23grains of H110. Factory 180gr REM has serious flames.

I just noticed, this my 629th post too! What are the chances!?!? Is this my lucky day? The only gun I ever wanted too!

i shot one of those once. VERY nice. actually shot better with it than a 10" Dan Wesson (also 44mag)

Good one on ya! I loved my 629 before I sold it... boo. Kind of regret that...

Have fun with it. Such a versatile round.

You reload, right?

"...always wanted to have something like Dirty Harry's gun..." Smith does make a 6.5", 'Classic' M29. No under barrel "L" frame lug. $1,280.00US MSRP though. Kind of suspect not many will make it up here. There are used M29's around though.
"...The only gun I ever wanted too!..." You can tell that to your other half or your ma, but we know better.

Oh yeah, I reload and will be casting my own boolits too. I only have one box of 180gr factory and doubt I'll buy another box again. Going to use H110. I want to see some flames. :)

I just bought 1k of 1X fired brass, but they look really dirty for 1x fired but what do I know.

I wanted to buy the real Dirty Harry gun but stainless would do with full underlug. I guess this gun will make my 9mm feel like 22lr in the future.

The trigger pull on this 629 is super feather light in SA mode. Holy smokes. I thought my P226 was pretty light.

That is definitely the question of the day if you are shooting .44 Mag.

Sweet gun, J777, congrats. H110 will not disappoint if you are looking for flames. My 5.5" Redhawk throws enough flame with 24.0gr of H110 that it can clearly be seen in bright sunlight.

The 245gr Keith SWC from Lyman (I think) is a fantastic bullet for the .44, I bought mine from Ben Hunchak before he shut down and my Redhawk loves them. I shot an 8.5" group @ 100yds last week with them and 8.2gr of WW231, and all the dispersion was horizontal (which means my fault, not the gun). With practice, 4"-5" groups off a simple rest would be reasonable.

There are few handgun cartridges as versatile as the big .44, enjoy.

Beautiful six-gun, one of the best, my ship still has to come in so I'm still makin' the Keith bullets and about 100 others, the Keith is excellent in revolvers but can cause feeding probs. in leverguns. I wouldn't load that beauty to heavily, it's too nice to do that to it.

I have the Lee tumble lube 240gr mold. I plan to follow the Lyman 240gr linotype loads for H110 (22.5-23.5). I think I'm going to start off with 20gr. I have no idea about kick, but you think this will not shoot my 629 lose with say with 22.5gr loads?

Honestly, not sure what to expect from this hand cannon. I only fired 357 mag.

I do plan to load 44 special loads with W231 and tightgroup. Lots of figuring now. First I need to cast the boolits.

Congrats!
Since going .44Magnum I've had no regrets... really fun, satisfying to both reload for and shoot (and no lost brass!!!)

I'd avoid those heavy loads of H-110, they are prolly close to Keith's heavy load of 2400, I'd go with something more moderate, say with Unique. If hunting is on the menu, that's a different story, a steady diet of heavy loads is not required for penetrating .020" of paper. Many folks have found that heavy loads hurt their accuracy and develop a flinch, which is hard to get rid of.IMHO

Hey thanks all!

I have 2 lbs of H110. I have W231, Tightgroup and some other stuff I can't recall right now... Who knows after shooting a few rounds of H110, I may not like at all.

I'll cast some boolits soon. Hopefully, can try my new toy out next week unless I got to range tomorrow. I'll fire a few factory REM 180gr and see how they feel compare to my future reloads.

now, how does this thing compare to a Raging Bull? i mean really, not just "Taurus sucks for after-sales support"

I had a 6" model 629 20 years ago. About as close to perfect as a revolver can be. Easy to shoot, accurate, easy to keep clean, and fairly light. I packed it in the bush, all over Northern AB, then I had this bright idea that a 10mm auto would be a better bush gun. I don't carry in the bush any more, though I might get another permit, but I finally came full circle and bought a 4" model 29. It isn't as nice as that 629 was, though. The smooth trigger on the 629 made DA shooting half way accurate.

Hmm... I think I may have to fire some factory rounds tomorrow and not wait until I can fire some side-by-side comparisons. It's going to take me at least a week to have my cast boolits ready (I have zero right now).

How do you guys normally clean your 629's? Gun store just said use copper brush is fine.
