So after a fun day at the range with my sks ( see this thread ) I've come to the conclusion I want another post/pre war rifle, the M44 seems to fit the bill.

Does anyone have any general feedback on the M44 and or 7.62 x 54r cartridge to share? Where to buy? What to look for? I dont believe Ill go for the rifle with scope package as Im not to fond of spending a significant amount of money on a rifle that'll only be used maybe four times a year, and Im trying to get better with iron sights anyway.

I understand that the 54r surplus ammo is hard to come by and most suppliers here arent expecting a shipment till late summer, but I'm ok with using commerical grade non corrosive ammo until then OR until I start experimenting with reloading rilfe cartridges ( currently working on 9mm and 45 )

Thanks in advance guys!

Quite a fun rifle, "real" recoil. Thread should be in the "milsurp" section; do a search in that section and you'll find lots if input. A few CGN sponsors can send you a M44 fast and for cheap; Frontier and Badger Arms come to mind.

Have fun!

Love my M44.. roars like a lion, too! ;)

Got mine from TradeEx but I think they're all out.. try P&S

theammosource has 7.62x54r sp i believe

Mods - can you move this to the right forum ( milsurp )

Is field stripping and cleaning fairly easy? I currently use gunzilla with my sks.. and the stuff is awesome !!

Got mine from Lou, and love it. I have only put 50 rounds down her, and I can't find any surplus either, so I am using commercial, then reloading. Mine shoots straight, makes some thunder, handles nicely, and I think it will be one of my keepers.

Thanks again Lou!

I don't understand why the M44 has such a reputation as a fire breathing dragon. Its barrel is about the same length as the Kar98K, so I would expect the Kar98k to be in the same league as well.

I love my kar98K, but I have never had a chance to fire a M44.

FMP, I bought an M38 just for kicks. Kick it does, very fun to shoot but will be for sale soon as 7.62x54r is a little on the pricey side for me. No surplus on the wetcoast either.
I'll bet your first words after shooting it will be HOLY F**K...:D

I'm curious what everyone is paying for 7.62x54r, best I can find is $1.20/round. My local shop (where I bought the gun) is $1.65/round, when I called him on it I was told "sorry thats the going rate" :kickInTheNuts: I don't support him anymore.

Glad you enjoy that Mosin Mac!

Like Mac said, reloading is always a good idea. And when surplus is available (comes and goes), buy tons.

UCS, the rep is comically exagerated a little. I beleive most milsurp x54 was loaded for the 29" BBL 91/30, hence the muzzle flash with the carbine rifles. Its not too bad but will definetely catch you by surprise in low light. I myself am a little partial to the longer 91/30 and would like to get one to go with my SKS. To the OP, these rifles are simple, easy to field strip and clean and are tons of fun to shoot. Frontier has the K44 on their site for $190.

$190? Ouch.. My M44 was $139 at TradeEx..

My Mosin was the first center fire I've ever fired and I didn't think the recoil was too bad, but when my friend fired the rifle next to me and the flash kinda blinded me and I felt the shock wave of the bullet I really gained an appreciation for it.

It's coming with me to the grave (bayonet extended, of course!)

:D

I really like the M44, I don't find the recoil bad at all. I fired 200 rounds of silvertip surplus and had no complaints. Standing beside it when it's being shot is pretty interesting though!

BTW, any Mosin thread would be remiss without mentioning ArtyMan
, who seems to be a wizard when it comes to bolt-action Red-rifles...:)

This is very true. He's out of the area on business right now, but will be back in another week or so. He'll definitely have a field (and a full) day going through the mosin threads.
