So once again I have just bought yet more tools from Brownell's to enable me to clean my AR-15s more quickly.

I think what I really need is a slave. A slave with really tough fingernails.

And don't tell me "get a gas piston upper", yeah, because that always works. Ever tried cleaning the gas plug on a Swiss Arms PE90? Or an AUG for that matter.

The main reason I use AR-15s is because they have no gas piston, which should in theory help with accuracy.

*Sigh*. Off to the basement I go...

What special tools? a toothbrush and chamber brush?

Cleaning is over rated. I have been putting a couple of hundred rounds through my rifle every day for the last three weeks and it is still good to go. Run it wet and relax.

Brass brush for hard carbon deposits. Really, you're over doing the cleaning if you spend more then 45 minutes on a firearm.

agreed, i have 1000 rounds down the pipe and havent cleaned it since new, just lubed it up. shes still really clean too. No visible deposits anywhere.

AR maintenance involves foaming bore cleaner once in a while, and plenty of g96 or clp on the bolt.
takes me longer to find the can than to give the bolt a spray.

Once I start getting malfunctions (usually related to a dirty chamber) I'll clean.

Otis sells a great scraper kit and 5.56 cleaning kit.
If you haven't used a scraper kit for your bolt carrier and bolt.......You probably haven't put many rounds down range.

Ironically we have some guns at work that have gone 35,000 rds without cleaning -- only lube...

Yes the barrels are shot out, (they are optics shock test guns) but our bolt goes that far or longer.

Lube the gun, you don't need scrapers.

Hmm. How should one clean them if they need their rifle to last more then 35K rounds? lol

Impressive. I would have thought that the buildup on the BCK, and the extension lugs would have been a problem way before then. I've gone a couple K rounds, but 35 is well beyond a couple.

Do you find the 308 models require any special, or more frequent cleaning BTW?

Would cleaning the barrel stop it from being shot out...or do they get shot out no matter what?

Get shot out pretty much no matter what -- they get shot 440 rds in auto mag after mag in burst to test NV for shock.
So while we are doing that we test a lot of other improvments, from botl design, carrier mods, coatings etc. ;)

I'd much rather scrape a gas plug, than clean all that poo outta the chamber area, but that's just me...

And probably every other old fart who learned about their combat rifle back in the era before "digicam", when the enemy was still the Russians...

:)

ar-15 ....cleaning?????

I just dip the upper in an oil bath ( with optic removed of course) and use compressed air to get the excess off. Patch thruw the barrel to remove excess and dip the carrier group in militech. Takes about 5 minutes... been running fine for 5 years on my 6 of my 7 ar's ( the 24 inch target ar gets a better barrel cleaning)

The C7/8 is easier to clean than the C1A1.

Sadly for the piston crowd the chamber gets dirty from casings being extracted when their is still pressure and gasses in the barrel and casing -- a 9mm blow back SMG get sa dirty chamber...

DI is not venting gasses into the chamber for all your thoughts and fears.

But dont let me, fact or logic get in the way of misplaced thoughts

Lots of the piston guns are easier to clean since they don't rely on antiquated maganese phosphate coatings...
A better coating on the M16 FOW bolt and carrier makes them much easier to wipe clean.

Although I've never had any malfunctions while firing, I've noticed that it's tough to get a live round out of the chamber sometimes. Are the lugs just getting really gunked up? I've been just lubing it, but maybe it needs a good scrub??
