Beretta 92 or Browning Hi-Power?

Looking at both and can't decide, so I thought I'd consult the infinite wisdom of CGN. :D So... Which one would you get and why? They're around the same price, so that isn't a factor (both are European made). I'm concerned about functionality and aesthetics. If you own/have used both, please chime in.

Beretta vs BHP

I've owned a few Beretta 92 series pistols over the years. The first one had the Euro style heel mag release back in the day. Anyway, even so having hands on the larger side I've always found the big Beretta grip like holding a table leg. Don't get me wrong the Beretta is a very nice pistol it just doesn't fit me well. I got a CZ75 when they first became available in Canada, and eventually sold off my last Beretta and never really looked back.

After a couple different CZ's I acquired a BHP MkIII as I found of all the double stack 9mm pistols I've owned/shot over the years it fits my hand best. I like it so much I also got another one in .40 S&W when they came out on the BHP MkIII frame. Go for the one that fits you best.

I've only had experience firing military issue BHP's and I was not very impressed, there were a few FTF's, though these were blamed on the magazines. I bought a M9 about a year and a half ago and I'm quite happy with it, the pistol fits in my hand and shoots nicely. Another bonus is that the m9 has very pleasing lines.
 
Beretta gets my vote. Had one for years, always reliable never gave me any problems. It's a great pistol all around and looks greats to boot!

I had a very similar experience, had a Beretta 92 and did not keep it long. I have had a number of Browning HP's which I liked far better than the Beretta.

I find the HP to be the most comfortable pistol I have ever handled.

However, I now shoot Glocks and CZ's as they are better for the handgun games (IPSC, IDPA).
 
i found a BHP to be easier to shoot relatively accurately my first time than a Beretta, but i think i slightly prefer the feel of the Beretta in my (large) hands. haven't shot the BHP in quite a while, but back then i found it easier to shoot relatively accurately than a Glock 34 (shot both same day)
 
People tend to like the high power grip... especially the rubber on the two toned sport model. I personally find the BHP trigger a real pain (literally) after a few mags worth. The mag saftey on the HP is the biggest pile of crap out there too.
The Beretta is more reliable in my experience. The only prob I have ever seen from a 92 was due to limp wristing. I've seen bhp's do odd things with even factory ammo but not enough to really complain about. Due to the transfer bar in the slide, even if you take out the mag disconnect 'safety' you'll never get a good SA trigger from the SA BHP. The Beretta's bbl rides in a unique rail system and moves straight back, and doesn't have any front bbl support... which affects accuracy. If you like military 9mm try a sig226.
If it is truly an Italian B92 I'd grab the 92. If you don't like it it'll be worth something to someone here as all we usually see is US made 92s

Pre-slanted dust cover, Plastic parts Beretta 92FS that were made in the early 1990's and Italian were works of art. Very smooth function, smooth triggers, beautiful satin black finish. New ones are rough and the slanted dustcover makes it look like the old 'Lady Smith' autos by S&W. When I owned those old italian 92 FS they were very accurate and reliable.

I also at one time owned a couple of Mark III Browning Hipower. They have good triggers if you yank out the magazine safety. Very accurate and reliable guns, better grip for small hand people than the Beretta.
 
My personal favourite is the Hi Power. I used to really dislike the Berettas, but now that I've handled and shot more of them I don't mind them as much.

But I prefer a SAO, manual safety pistol anyways. The trigger on a Beretta has a long takeup, and the DA is pretty heavy. If you pop the mag safety out of the Hi Power, you'll get a much better trigger.
 
Get a BHP and toss the magazine safety.

-Grip size suitable for those of us who don't have sasquatch hands.
-DA/SA doesn't do anything that single action in condition 1 can't do better (notwithstanding some competition rules).
-If aesthetics are important to you, I think the BHP looks better.
 
Both are great pistols. Each person's hands are different hence different feel to each of those guns. You have to try both and based on that decide. I have both and I have not decided yet which I like better :D
 
Wow. I don't think I've ever read so much misinformation before. If I remember I'll type a better reply from my PC when I get home.
 
i have not used a hi-power, so i can't comment on that, however i can say that i LOVE my M9 (it fits me great though; and i think it looks SUPER HOT).

however you decide, i'm sure you can't go wrong.

I own a Beretta 92F; it is a nice shooting gun, but the grip is a tad bit on the large side. If you have a problem with the trigger; a hammer spring out of a DAO (most call it a D srpring) will help a bit.

I have shot a High Power a couple of times; they fit my hand well, but they were worn out CF pistols, so my exp[erience with them is not 100%. If you had a new one, they probably would be a nive gun.
 
I have medium hands and the grip is a little on a larger side (still pretty ergonomic), after I installed the D spring, extended mag release and a slightly thinner aluminum grips the gun fits me pretty well :)
