Ok, I'm sure this has come up before, but didn't find it. I have a great hunting spot selected for opening day, LOTS of animal traffic. One problem, it's on a dead end side road of a main logging road. The road is very narrow, anything wider than a Tracker will lose paint driving down this road, trust me. The spot I want to set up is pretty much tight to the road edge, only because the other side of the road is a 150 yard long field that edges a river. Because where I need to set up is so close to the road, I'm worried that I may end up having my game spooked by another hunter driving down the road to check things out. Any suggestions on how I can protect my "honey hole"? If I park my vehicle at the trail head and walk down (about 400 yards) do you think that will be enough of a deterrent? I know the bush belongs to all of us and I respect that, but also I know there are TONNES of other decent hunting spots not so far away. The only reason I'm so stuck on this on is I've already got a lot of time, study and strategy invested in this place.

I hear you, is sucks sometimes but it's crownland and anyone can use it anytime they want to and screw up all your hard work.

I've got a good little area but the recreational ATV croud has tore up all the trails, pisses me off but nothing I can do.

parkgin in the middle of the trail is just going to piss off the next guy who has scoped out a good spot further along.

now if you post a big sign up the trail that says 'Danger Bear Baiting' :D that might decrease any traffic. (assuming that bear baiting is legal in BC)

Blocking 400m of road isn't the same as blocking 4km.... or 14km! Your plan doesn't sound unreasonable, just remember that it doesnt' give you the right to freak if someone still walks in- there is no way another guy can know for sure what your parked truck means.
I have bumped into guys in the woods before and always managed to share happily with a quick whistle and wave to let everyone know who is where.

Not much you can do on crown land, but some outfitters in my area have "Hunter in Stand, Please Stay Away" signs they put up on the trails into their stands when hunters are in them. Most people see the signs and go try a different trail, but not all do.

The only way to have a spot all to yourself is to hike into something that no one else is willing to hike to. If it is crown land, everyone else owns it as much as you do. Any attempt to hog it for yourself will be resented, just like you would resent anyone who decided to do that to you. How will you feel if you get there and 20 minutes earlier, someone blocked "your" road to prevent all the riffraff from spoiling his hunt.

My advice is to find somewhere far enough from a road that no one wants to go there except you. Being willing to work for it is the solution to "private" hunting spots.

If someone took the trouble to put up signs and the words are phrased as a request, I'd stay away.

For the record, I have no intention of blocking access to the road, I know that's just asking for trouble. I do like the idea of a sign alerting hunters that there is an active stand in the area.

Park at the start of the trail and walk in but dont park in the middle, most hunters have the courtesy to use a different hunting spot when another hunting party is in the area although some dont i have experienced a$$ holes like that but for the most part its mutual respect so you should be alright.

What if they took the trouble to put them on every trail? What if they patrolled the road telling everyone that they had hunters on every trail? What if they told you that their hunters "had big guns, and didn't like hunters going down their trails"? Nothing like phrasing your request as a death threat.:( What if they put up "No hunting, logging operations" where there hasn't been a tree cut in 5 years? That's about two days worth in one area. Still feel like being nice? I can take an days drive and post half a provincial forest. Good deal for me, not such a great deal for everyone else in the country.

There are people who will take your good nature and use it against you. Outfitters are about the worst.

You never know, someone else walking in could push a deer to your stand........hunting can really be a crap shoot! And really, deer won't go that far when a human walks by. Five times out of ten, it will end up circling around and picking the humans trail up and follow it.......that has been my experience anyways, with White Tails. People put way to much stock into what they see and hear on TV and Magazines, instead of actually studying the animals themselves!

I've hunted a couple of areas where dead end roads lead to a good moose spot. Any time I went there and found a vehicle parked fairly visibly part way down the road, I turned back and left them alone. I know I was not the only one to do this.

Maybe park just off the road, but obviously visible, and put a sign on your ATV asking to be left alone. Most of us are pretty decent...

It really depends on the situation. I've given a sheepish wave and driven off when I've stumbled upon someone set up at the end of a road. I would normally not hunt in an area where the is a truck parked, if it is parked beside the road I'd probably steer clear of it out of courtesy. If i saw someone completely blocking a road I'd probably be mad. It kinda reminds me of when two moose seasons ago there were some clowns that had a clear cut we'd been hunting blocked and they got very rude and almost threatening. I popped off a box of shells with my 12 ga at grouse, t that no one but me could see, up the road from the entrance to the cut. I sure hope all that noise didn't scare animals away from the area...:stirthepot2:

Ah, well, then I'd set fire to the forest, of course.

If there's already a truck parked I always leave. Partially out of courtesy and partially because you never know what the other persons all about. How many stories have you heard about people being shot/shot at because someone took a shot at a noise or movement? Other guy might be loud and obnoxious and scared away all the game.
