Build a giant tumbler

well, we have 55 gal. plastic drums where i work. I could snag one of them. never mind 1000 9mm at a run, we could do 10 K!

Is this the type with a slightly bowl shaped bottom?

We could cut it down for the vibrator type, and make a new lid.

The reason for the bowl shape, is that without it, the media doesn't circulate as much. Ditto for the cone shaped center in the commercial units.

I made one before out of an bucket, didn't work very well until I put a cone in the middle of it.

Sure but you can do that for under $500

the one that storm has... motor and contols taken out of a tread mill,i scrounged in the garbage, the drum was donated from dumbdawg who got that for free also, the frame was made from scaps i found in the scrap bin at work....BUT the damm thing cost me $$$$$$$$$$$$....cost me $0.99:eek:.
pissed me right off i had to buy the pie plate to use as a access door

JYC............i believe cocked and locked and i are building a" FREE" but bigger foginator style tumbler

And what a great unit it is.............

I ran about 5000 9mm for a fellow EESAer the other week and it did not skip a beat.

Thats the one, yes, they are radiused at the bottom. I may have 10K brass if you count it all together, er, maybe more, i tend to scavange, but i bet i have 6-8 k 9mm easy. That said, a tumbler that would do 2-3000 would do nicely LOL

The barrel is like an egg with flat ends right?
I think that shape should aid agitation. Now to make up a roller set up that it will stay in.
A larger and modified version of the fogginator should be the ticket.
Fogducker used an old treadmill motor for his, and that's still probably the best bet to find free. Variable speed control comes with it, tons of power.
You realize that you will need maybe 100lbs of media in a barrel that size? We will need to find cheap media, or substitutes/fillers.
Some thought should be given to how we will separate the media from the cases on that large a scale as well.

I built one out of city plastic water main pipe 12 inch inside .on rolls If I can figure out
how to post pic I will put them up.

our send e mail add I will send you pic's

ROFL, i think a 55gal tumbler might be a bit much, IE won't fit in my basement. (hmmmm might fit it in my shed thought) Yes, the bottom shape should help the flow if you want one for a vibrating mixer. I'd settle for a good big piece of that plastic pipe, maybe a bit longer, but if Storm has done 5000 9 in it, then it's as big as i need. I just scored a treadmill, just have to check it works. Got it free :D so i'm following tradition. Also have a line on a frequency drive, so if that doesn't work i can maybe use an ac motor, that means i'd have to put in a 240 outlet, but hey, then i'd have full variable speed and no motor brushes,,,,the plot thickens!

well look no further;) as the piece of pipe dumbdawg donated to me,there has to be at least 6 feet of it left over;)..
keep an eye out for some 12 inch pipe caps though;) or if that fails,we can rig up like the other one i did

1. 5 Gal paint drum (new ones fairly cheap at Home Depot), remove the handle, put it on your treadmill with a board clamped behind it, and away it goes! Swap the board for your wife's pastry roller, for improved operation. Better still if you can get your 30 minutes of exercise in at the same time...

2. For that matter, attach sling swivels to the top and bottom, and you can leash it to your waist as you go for a relaxing sunset stroll with the missus, the tumbler rolling behind you, sounds of the ocean. Romantic, no? :) Maybe tie it to the dog, and play fetch? Or to your kids - they always have so much energy, running around the yard.

3. Pour brass and media into a lawn roller drum, and work-out that rough spot on your lawn!

I bought a quantity of cleaned brass off a Sponsor who was using a portable cement mixer - I thought that was quite efficient. Certainly did a good job.

I forgot to mention Duct Tape, but I'm sure someone will.

use a few extra wheels to help support the thin walled drum..........if i was to make up another one..id use a 30 propane tank as a drum.........
I crushed my thin-walled drum within a week. My 2nd one is a 2Gal cooler from Walmart for $16. Not huge, but tumbles about 300 9mm pieces of brass + 5lb of SS media. Propane tank sounds awesome but how'd you go about attaching the lid?

i work for a welding shop...so anything is possible;)...
but for a rough idea off the top of my head.......take one tank(they about 12 inch diameter) in the end were the valve is.......cut about a 6 or 7 inch diameter hole.....
take an extra tank and cut from the opposite end(the end with no valve) a cover so you get at least a 1 inch gap over lapping the hole you cut on tumbler tank...drill a few hole and weld a few bolts in place ,using wing nuts to hold cap in place..
simple and easy;)
