How many really hunt ...

Turkey, grouse, ducks, geese, coyotes, deer, groundhogs.

I have 4 and 6 year old boys that keep me near home, but that is changing as this year I'll be taking my eldest a few times. I can't wait...

Did a permission hunt last night, set up trail cams, and watch critters through optics last night. My dedicated gun-and-go time is fall, but I get out for the off season critters whenever I can. (wife permitting, of course).

How many of us on this board really hunt ... I mean religiously ... not once a year but all the time? I'm curious to see how many animals you take each year while hunting ... :)

Ive been accused of being a "poser" and not hunting all the time on the NS Hunting forums.

I admit I love guns, gun politics (!), and the outdoors. Killing and eating stuff is a 2ndary goal.

But I do hunt...im not that good at it though. Well im an awesome rabbit hunter, been hunting / snairing them from the age of 11.

DEER on the other hand...I tried using my rabbit tactics...dosent work. These things are actually skittish.

I always hunted on foot and kept a round un-chambered in my .300 savage so needless to say didnt get any deer. When I had a chance to get one I chambered the round and it was gone- too much safety for me I guess.

NOW I have finally build a deer blind and will bait...like all the other hunters do....I just find it so uncompetitive. Its bad enough to use a gun on foot- not that i ever had any luck this way.

I had a period of some years from the early 90's until 2006 where I didn't hunt. From say 1978 through to 1991 I hunted upland game and waterfowl every year from Sept 01 (season opening) until the end of October. I was out for deer every November from say 84 until 1991 as much as possible. In some cases I hunted with my bow and went out many evenings after work and Saturdays. Most of the rifle hunts were on Saturdays and the occasional weekday.

Since 2006 I've been out every November for 1 to 2 weeks depending on how quickly we fill our tags. I hunt whitetail deer every year on a "general" tag. I got drawn for antlered mule deer this year (first time) and deferred on the antlerless mulies. Previous years I got drawn for anterless mulies and got 3 tags total. I filled two of them each season. I hunt elk every year. Filled my antlerless elk tag the first time I got drawn (08) and I buy a "general" elk tag when I don't get drawn (like this year). I got my first bull moose last fall and should get drawn every 3 or 4 years in the zone we hunt in.

It's worth mentioning I hunt with 5 other people and we arrange things so we have at the very least, 1 moose drawn each fall. This year we should have two bull moose tags to fill and most of us carry a general elk tag just in case we run into a herd as often happens in the WMU we hunt in.

I may start hunting upland game and waterfowl again in the future but have no immediate plans for either even though I do own a couple shotguns. But I plan on hunting big game every fall until I'm incapacitated and therefore unable, or dead.

My rifle takes care of around 2800 person meals per year, give or take a few hundred depending on the variables at home and in the bush.

I enjoy hunting, but don't have time to do it more extensively than an annual fall deer hunt, both muzzle and centrefire. I do what I can, and really look forward to getting out.

I started hunting big game for the first time last fall and loved it. Got what's left of two white tails in the freezer to prove it, too.

I enjoyed it so much, I am going on a week long trip to northern Alberta for moose, elk and black bear this fall. Just checked my draws and I am good to go for antlered/antlerless elk, antlered moose, along with general black bear and white tail tags. Should be a great week spent in the bush.

I would like to get out for rabbits and upland game, but I spend all summer racing motocross and can't get out hunting until after kids get back in school in September. My oldest went out with me for one day last fall and loved it. I anticipate more days spent hunting as they get older and able to hunt themselves. It is a great way to spend father/son time teaching them about nature and hunting.

Annually: partridge, pheasant, mule, WT, coyote, (some yrs ducks, geese), moose, ptarmigan, grouse.

Bi-annually to 4 yrs apart: antelope

Depending on draws: turkey(4-5yrs), elk

I'll likely do one more sheep hunt as my prioritie's getting right, but as I get older it's less and less appealing to me.(an awful lot of uphill ;) )

Now that our youngest is leaving the nest we may be able to squeak in either a spring BC turkey hunt/bass fishing trip, or an AB bear hunt.

I don't usually shoot gophers around my place, I leave the "seed" in case someone takes a kid out.

peter338,

You're my hero man!

As for me, i guess this is how it goes on a yearly basis:

Jan 1st - March 31st : Rabbits and Sharp Tailed Grouse
Jan 1st - June 15th : Rabbit
August 15th - October 31st: Black Bear
September 15th - December 31st: Spruce, Ruffed Grouse and Rabbit
October 9th - November 15th : Moose

I don't hunt waterfowl anymore because of the steel shot regulations. I know i'm going to get flamed for this by the die hard waterfowlers but i've seen more birds wounded by steel shot than killed and when i kill, i like to do it as quickly as possible. I'm not saying you guys don't. I'm just saying from my expieriences that this is what happens with me. If i was really into hunting them i guess i'd buy the bismuth or tungsten stuff but it doesn't interest me that much to spend that kind of money on shot shells. Anyone know of some good steel shot shells that take waterfowl down as cleanly as possible without spending an arm and a leg on them? Black Cloud and Remington Nitros come to mind but are they really pricy?
