I am posting this because I am after some TRUE facts about the 870 Express as sometimes people seem to like to rip on something cause everyone else is. I know the fit and finish are not as nice as the 870 Wingmaster but I cannot afford one and am not interested in getting a used one either...and personally looks do not make the gun to me. The things I have been hearing it it will rust SUPER easily and at all costs avoid using it in the rain and also in the rain the forearm can and WILL swell up making the gun harder to ####. And also that they have a life span of only a few hunting seasons. Any of this true? I am hoping to get one for hunting this fall.

i will tell yopu what i found out .i was looking for a shot gun and looked at all off them and for the money the mossy 535 is a way better gun then the new 870 .fit and finish as well as being very tough i have had mine now for 5 years and shot the heck out of it 7 turkeys 4 deer hundered ducks and geeses as well as rabits and birds .never let me down once ,check out the 535 you will not be sorry .for the same money as an 870 you can get the 535 in camo with scope holes drillled in the recever sling mounts and chokes .it is jut an alround way better gun DUTCH

don't use mine for hunting, but can tell you that it does rust up super easy. I couldn't believe it when I took it out for some gravel pit shooting in a light rain, put it away and a couple days later there was a light rust sheen all over it. my 2 cents

First, all guns will rust at some point. Oil and lube and it will never be a problem. Plenty of guys make the mistake of failing to give the outside surfaces a wipe down while on the marsh or other wet environment.

I own an 870 Wingmaster, an 870 Express Magnum and an 870 Super Magnum. The Wingmaster is leaps and bounds ahead of the other two in quality of both finish and function.

I find both of the lower end guns are stiff and prone to feeding and jamming problems. I will never buy another lower end 870. Never had a single problem with the Wingmaster. It is worth the extra $200 to $300, depending who you buy it from.

I have owned three, One plain jane, one Turkey model, one Super Magnum. I don't own any of them anymore. I personally know that RD-55(member) on here had his Super Magnum's barrel split just forward the chamber when he fired a 3 inch steel Goose load. The ones I owned all jammed with brass based Federal ammo and Winchester's cheap target loads. Also the finish is poor and I found on all but the camo turkey model very prone to rust.

I would buy a low mileage Browning or if you want new get a Mossberg 835 or 500, I owned a 535 as well the Waterfowl package, I only fired 500 rounds or so through it then traded it in on a BPS.

I have owned a Super Express Magnum Synthetic for 5 years now, no issues with shot shells or rust. I do wipe mine down after it is wet and use a rust preventative on it. I have shot Federal, Winchester, Remington and Imperial shells with it from 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" with no issues. I also purchased a rifled slug barrel for it and it works well also.
This is my experience your results may vary!

I have had the regular 870 Express and currently have two of the green Express Magnums. All three, no problems, no rust. 1000's of rounds. Keep it clean and you should be fine. One green one was even submerged (ooops), still cleaned it up, no problems knock on wood (meaning my head).

I have had my 870 Express for three years now and, with proper maintenance and cleaning, I have had no problems with the finish or any shell I've put through it. I would gladly buy another.

I have an 870 express that I bought as a combo unit a decade ago. The vented waterfowl barrel shots well and the 18 inch smooth bore with iron sights is accurate to about 75 meters with 1 oz slugs> It shoots chickens ok if you know your load and can keep a few inches high. I've never had a jam or misfire and its easy to clean and maintain. Its not a fancy gun and its a bit heavy depending on the use, but built rock solid and I have full confidence that it will fire when required. I think the price was about 500 bucks ten years ago with both barrels, and I've used it regularly since without a problem. I got what I paid for.

I've had my Express for over a decade now, and it hunts every season, bagging deer, turkey, geese, ducks, rabbits, squirrels, coyotes and other critters. I have a synthetic Remington stock on mine.

Trust me, it works all the time, and in all weather conditions, including freezing rain, and has been through numerous fields and very thick bush. One time, I got tangled up and fell in some mud. I cleared the mud right there from the muzzle with a makeshift rod (a long stick) and some crumpled up paper towel and continued to hunt, bagging at least a couple of rabbits that morning.

For lubricant, use G96 and you'll have no problem.

I duck hunt with my 870 express. Lots of water and mud. May have used it to brace a fall a few times. I've never had a stoppage. I did have some very light surface rust on the barrel once. I wiped it off with gun oil and it never came back.

Aside from the non blued finish, and the cheaper parts, the Express is a super deal and indestructable.
I have 5 at last count, as well as some Wingmasters, and they are dependable guns.
The rust that gets on it wipes off easily.

An acquaintance of mine has a 12ga 870 Express that has been used much (for Waterfowl) over the past years....action is smooth and the shotgun works very well.

IMO, diligent maintenance + application of a very thin coat of CLP (after each cleaning session) will ensure the requisite anti-rust shield.

My express has been used to hunt deer, grouse, geese and ducks...all sorts of weather, no rust on it and it's never jammed on me either. I clean my guns after use though, keep them oiled and dry them before putting them away.

I borrowed a buddies express and almost put my arm out trying to cycle it. It sticks, it jams, it is what it is - a cheap shotgun. No thanks. Buy once and buy quality or buy cheap and buy twice. Get a Wingmaster

Honestly how hard is it to wipe your gun down? The only time I ever had an issue with rust on my 870 express super magnum was never in the last 5 years. Maybe the fit and finish isn't as nice as my dad's wingmaster sp, but since it was broken in I've never had an issue with feeding.

I have owned several 870's all worked perfectly, as far as rust well put the oil to them and they will never rust. All mine get lots of oil everywhere, I always wipe my guns down with oil after use. There's been more 870 shotguns sold than any other brand. If they were junk there would not have been millions sold. Look how many police forces use 870 compared to Mossberg, that has to speak volumes of there dependability.
