375 H&H or 375 Ruger??

I've decided that I would like to get a 375 caliber rifles but I'm unsure which of the two would be better? Gun would be used primarily to deliver some very potent moose juice.

You could always get a H&H and then have it rechambered for the 375 Wby and you can then have the best of both worlds. Shoot H&H in it for "lighter" loads and then the Wby for full throttle. Mine is a custom Brno 602.
 
The .375 Ruger is a superior cartridge to the .375 H&H, however the difference should not be a deal breaker if you find a rifle you like in H&H. I would find the rifle you want and use whatever cartridge it is chambered in.
 
I'd almost bet the H&H ammo will be easier to find. Prices per 20 are very close. Your options for the Ruger ammo is limited to Hornady or reloading too. Rifles to Rugers, I think.
 
.375 Ruger for me. Medium lenght action with the 20" barrel made it a short sturdy rifle with plently of hoomph. I topped mine with a VX-III 2.5X8.

I had a quick skim. Not a fan of wasting much time reading about a rifle chambering (375 Ruger) I do not want to own. Discussions about firearms and cartridges makes those with limited intelligence feel like an engineer or some scientific whiz dude.

375 H&H works well in my hands with my handloads. Very, very well.
 
I particularly like this part:

1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place to get a steak dinner? is…you really want pork chops.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. The laws of physics do not apply to firearms in that there is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges and certain cartridges are so powerful that their kinetic energy can knock a big game animal off its feet but not knock the shooter who fired the cartridge off their feet.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified so it can carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and a detachable box magazine both use mechanical latches, only the floor plate latch is reliable regardless of the fact that almost every modern military rifle in the world uses a detachable box magazine including those chambered in 50 BMG.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact that it is the basis of the US Marine Corp M40 sniper rifle for over 40 years with no changes to the action or extractor and the choice of more military sniper units and law enforcement agencies than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR, and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting game that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (despite the fact most safaris take place in the winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. It is not the size of the ding in the gun's finish that matters but whether or not the ding occurred in the safe or in the field because safe dings are okay but field dings are worse.
10. In general, those who have time to make close to a 1000 posts a year on AR, know more about hunting and shooting than people who make their living in the hunting and shooting industry and have typically spent 150 days in the field or at the range each year for the last two decades.

;):D Good point Ted:). For me personally, the choice would be the 375 H&H, for a number of reasons.
  • I had a 375 H&H in a Ruger #1 plus my son in law lent me his Sako custom 375 H&H and as such, I still have the dies plus a sizeable quantity of brass.
  • As the 375 H&H cartridge has been around for a while, there's a wide variety of firearms, new and used, available in that chambering.
  • Last but not least, a 375 H&H caliber would fit in well with some of the other more or somewhat "vintage" calibers I have such as
;
  1. 219 Donaldson Wasp
  2. 7x57R
  3. 7x61 S&H
  4. 30-06
  5. 308 Norma Magnum
  6. 303Br.
  7. 348 WCF
  8. 358 Norma Magnum
  9. 45-70
  10. 458 WM
 
Okay, I read everything on the link, and I can say some of those guys have severe problems with basic logic, and likely little real experience in what they are commenting on.

H&H vs Ruger is too close to call based on cartridge alone. The deciding factor for me would be the rifle. If I found a nice Brno 602 at a steal of a price, I'd buy it; but I'd also buy one of those handy stainless/synthetic Ruger's at a steal price too.

What I actually bought was a Remington XCR in .375 RUM. Basically .378 Weatherby performance, but no Weatherby price. And a reloader can, of course, develop a huge range of loads with it.

Hello 8ball:

If you don't mind me asking where did you purchase your Ruger from? Do you reload for it? If so, where did you purchase brass and dies for your gun? Thanks in advance for your time.

This was interesting to me, as I haven't' tried 350gr bullets in my 375 Ruger yet. Although I don't know what I need 350 gr bullets for, anyway:D

I put together one Legend chambered for 375 Ruger for a Zambian PH and shipped it over last summer. We used a Pre-64 action as requested and a 23" barrel and got 2380-2400-fps velocities in 95 degree temps with 350gr Woodleighs. Measured case expansion showed it was a safe but Maximum load with no sticky bolt lift, etc. Unfortunately he only got to shoot one buffalo with it before the season ended last year. Accuracy was just excellent with both Soft and FMJ bullets. Athol Frylinck purchased this rifle for clients to use in the event their rifle went gunny sack for any reason
