I am in the process of upgrading to r-pal, and am interested in purchasing a hand gun for plinking at my local rifle club. I have at this point no urge to get into center fire. I was thinking that a Ruger Mark 2 or 3 would be a good choice or perhaps the Beretta neos, anyone have suggestions on a good 22 lr auto pistol or double action revolver that will not break the bank?

Thanx

22 restricted

Personally I prefer the Browning Camper or Buckmark models. Easier to clean and take apart.

personally, i found the browning to be somewhat heavy and WAY OVERPRICED- i went with the neos- for 125 less than the browning- and as far as cleaning , BERETTAS have it all over everyone else- either flip a lever, or hold down a button and turn a wheel, and the whole thing comes apart- i've got 3 now- a 92, a 948( prohib) and the neos- and they're all DEAD EASY to strip and clean

T-star, how do you find the accuracy of the neos? I am told by many people that they are good shooters.

I know that your preference at the moment is for a rimfire, but you may wish to consider the centerfire option in the near future, once you've acquired your rimfire pistol. By the way, gallen270's choice of a S&W M-17 is an excellent one. The logic of choosing a centerfire companion gun to your rimfire is that many marksmanship drills can be done in the comfort of your own home with dry firing, and dry firing is bad news with any rimfire and is a nuisance with snap cap in a rimfire auto although not a problem with a revolver. However, used double action S&W .38 Special revolvers are inexpensive to purchase and shoot particularly if you begin handloading. I'm thinking here of the police issue S&W M-10s that have since been replaced with autos. I started handloading with a .38 Special Lee Loader for my shiny new Colt Trooper and never looked back - that was nearly 40 years ago now, and although a press and scale (and a bunch of other stuff) has replaced the Lee Loader and powder dippers, I still enjoy loading and shooting .38s.

I'm in the same position, wanting a handgun. I did PPC shooting when i was a kid, and even bought a gun, though it's 12-6 and i couldn't get it transferred to me when i turned 18. My dad still has it. It's a s&w .38/357 snubbie, 2.5inch. We took it to the range the other day, along with his .38/.357 old model flattop and old model single 6. To be honest, some guys get off on the big bang and the recoil, but i found shooting the .22 a lot more fun than either of the .357's.

If you've never owned a handgun before, and are relatively new to shooting one, a .22 will give you lots of enjoyment and good times. And even after you get a cf handgun, you'll probably still shoot the .22 more :) It's dirty cheap and you can shoot it all day without getting tennis elbow or anything. Also, probably the only semi i would get would be a .22. For some reason i just can't get into the idea of a 9mm, .40 or .45. when a .22lr will end up being just as accurate :stirthepot2:

My 3 favorite .22's are the ruger mark 1,2 and 3's, S&W model 41 and the hammerli xesse/sig trailside. The hammerli/sig and S&W are great right out of the box but cost a fair bit more than the ruger's. The ruger's have pretty crappy triggers out of the box but are a great platform for modification and will shoot just as well as the other guns with a bit of work.

Just bought a ruger mark 3. I looked at the browning buckmark camper and it was close. They are both grear pistols, I just liked the look of the stainless mark 3 more, as well as the balanced feel of the gun. Take down is a #####, but once you do it a few times it isn't that bad...I have a 1911 and that took some getting use to as well for take down. Thew ruger shoots well and very accurate. Good luck with you decission!

I bought a Buck Mark Camper as my first gun, it cost $329.00 (Cheapest gun in the store) I am going to stick with it as it is very solid and handles nice. I shoot Blazer (CCI) .22LR or American Eagle (Federal) .22LR both work well and at $25.00/500 cheap to run....:D

don't overlook the S&W 22A as well. around $350. shoots very well and looks better than the Ruger. the S&W 41 is wonderful, but at 3x-4x the price it damn well ought to be.

so far, my own S&W 22A loves Dynapoint ammo, and it'll eat Blazers too (even though my 525 pack only had 415 in it and half were messed up - ####ty powder load made them tumble before they even got to the 25yard target). bone stock it works great and has a nice trigger from day 1 with no mods needed. can't find a hard-shell / kydex holster for it though, but most of the time that's really not a big deal.

i've got the plain-grip one, though you can get the fancy wood grips separately fot it as well. around $80 i think.

the thing i never liked about the ruger (and esp the buckmark) is that they're thin and flat, not very substantial. to me, the 22A feels a bit bigger and more "present" than the others. the buckmark felt downright small and thin to me.

Another happy Norinco .22 owner here. but already had a number of center fires and just wanted a cheap .22. if it's going to be your only gun and if you have the money get a SIG 226 in 22. If not Buckmark.

i still cant find a better rimfire handgun (for the price/quality value ) approaching the ruger offers....sure disassembling has to be learned, otherwise pretty good accuracy, and my MKlll come with adjustable sights and FO front....i never looked back.

Good point about the 41 BP7 i had never looked at the new prices on the websites till now. When i bought my mark 2 competition i think it was around $450 and i was looking at a 41 that was around $750. I guess that 41 was a pretty good deal, i don't really regret it though as i can't shoot any better with a 41 and i prefer the look and feel of my ruger. It's also really fun out shooting people with guns that cost a lot more.

Thank you all for the input. The S&W 22A is a sharp looking unit. Looks like I will have to update my wish list. I am almost scared to Google the SIG 226, sounds expensive, nice I bet!
