I know that your preference at the moment is for a rimfire, but you may wish to consider the centerfire option in the near future, once you've acquired your rimfire pistol. By the way, gallen270's choice of a S&W M-17 is an excellent one. The logic of choosing a centerfire companion gun to your rimfire is that many marksmanship drills can be done in the comfort of your own home with dry firing, and dry firing is bad news with any rimfire and is a nuisance with snap cap in a rimfire auto although not a problem with a revolver. However, used double action S&W .38 Special revolvers are inexpensive to purchase and shoot particularly if you begin handloading. I'm thinking here of the police issue S&W M-10s that have since been replaced with autos. I started handloading with a .38 Special Lee Loader for my shiny new Colt Trooper and never looked back - that was nearly 40 years ago now, and although a press and scale (and a bunch of other stuff) has replaced the Lee Loader and powder dippers, I still enjoy loading and shooting .38s.
