Well I got hooked on trap trying it out at the Family Fun Day at the local range and so did my brother. Now my brother started shooting for the very first time that day so he's still getting used to recoil.

Which 12 gauge shotgun do you suggest that has decent recoil that I can buy for him and I to shoot trap on? Money is a little tight right now so spending huge amounts is out of the question :p

I owned a mossberg 500 persuader and that damn thing kicked like a mule compared to the Remington 1100 we tried at the range.

But I don't really need a semi auto either as a pump would be more than fine. I did like the "rib" down the barrel of the 1100 though and found it helped a lot in aiming.

I believe the Model 1100 was a Remington and not a Winchester. The Remington 1100 auto loader or Remington 870 pump should work well for your needs. There are a fair number of used Remington Model 1100 shotguns around that can be had at a decent price.

Yes it was a remington, my mind was distracted by a winchester at the time :p

Ive been looking on the EE here at all the 1100's seem to be going for $600 and up which is a little more than what I need for a shotgun that is really only going to be used one or twice a month.

Mainly I just want a shotgun that isn't going to beat the hell out of my brother while shooting 50 rounds or so.

You can get a brand new Remington 870 for less than 500$. Many guys use those at our gun club for trap and skeet shooting, and they work just fine. You might want to consider adding a muzzle brake to keep the recoil down a bit.

You could try a couple different recoil pads on the stock to help recoil. My favorite semi right now is a Winchester SX3, barely any recoil to it. I had an 118 lb girl shooting it for the first time and she said there wasn't much kick. My 870 has a bit of kick, but I don't mind.

Well, if you're shooting target loads, they're generally not going to kick anywhere near as much as a slug or "00" buck will. That said, I shoot an O/U for trap and skeet and find the recoil moderate, but much more reduced when I shoot the 11-87 that I hunt ducks with.

Have you considered a single shot to save money? I know that at my trap club, they only allow you to load one shell when shooting trap. Skeet however, is two...

A pump is going to kick just as much as an over/under or a single. That said, I recently picked up a Mossy 500AB pump on the EE in decent shape for $200.00 - keep your eyes peeled, you may find a couple of good deals.

Have you considered also going to a 20ga. instead to reduce recoil?

A muzzle brake on a gun used for Trap. cp: Your squad members won't be to appreciative.

Are you talking about shooting random clays in the bush or are we talking about shooting trap? A lot of people ask about shooting trap and skeet and SC, but it ends up they are looking to shoot some hand toss clay in the pit.

If you're looking to shoot whatevers, then any of the pump mentioned would be fine. If you're only looking to shoot trap, you might as well look at a trap gun.

start with the random clays and see how it takes me :p

If worse comes to worse I'll try it out on the grouse. Lately they've been flying more than sitting there and hitting a grouse on the wing with a scoped .22 isn't "easy"....
