Using this list from 922r per ATF would it be possible to import a Tavor into the US?

This is from another site but it explains it pretty good.

Here's how it works. The rifle "as-is" is 922(r) compliant. That means that in its current configuration, ATF has deemed it to be a sporting firearm and authorized its importation.

Now, you come along and want to start changing features on your rifle. You want a folding stock. ATF says that your rifle with a folding stock is not legal for importation because it is not a sporting firearm. 922(r) says that you cannot assemble a firearm that would be illegal for importation.

So basically, you can either leave your rifle configured as it was imported or you can play a little game ATF came up with that reclassifies your firearm from "imported" to "Made in USA."

To do this, ATF has made a list of parts that they consider major components of a firearm. You take the list and determine how many of the listed parts your rifle contains. It might be 13 or 16 or 19. Whatever.

ATF then says that if your rifle doesn't contain 10 or more "imported" parts, it is not considered an imported firearm. If you figured out your rifle had say 16 parts on the list, you replace any 7 parts on the rifle with US manufactured parts and your rifle is now "Made in America".

You can now make any modifications to your rifle you desire that are legal for any other US made rifle.

The parts list is:

Quote:
(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings
or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions
(4) Mounting blocks (trunnions)
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates

Based on what you provided...

If a US company can produce parts for the Tavor and ensure that no more than 10 parts (listed above) were made by Israel Weapon Industries, the Tavor could then be imported into the USA.

Is that correct?

So, you need US made:
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(9) Gas pistons
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates

If you have the money, nothing is impossible. ;)

Yes, as long as you meet 922R. So you need the receiver insert, the barrel and other parts to be US made, or the gun needs to meet "sporting purpose", and then be converted. Didn't we go through this with you last year?

Virtually impossible without reverse engineering the tavor. Frankly, they will be sold in the US by then.

Ouch. So go ahead and delete this thread. Too many brain beans;)

Hey man, nothing at all wrong with asking. Even if it has been discussed a thousand times before, this is YOUR first time asking/discussing. So continue to ask anything you want, and people will/should be more than happy to answer your questions and point you in the right direction. We have all had questions we needed answered and we were probably not the first ones to ask them.

Thank you guys. On the double stack mag issue, I was thinking of a block that plugs into the magazine well and then permantly pin the block into the magwell. Sort of like the SL8 single stack mags and then enlarging the magwell to accept double mags. I've been looking into the PAL for non-Canadian citizens.

at least on AK's 922r compliancy is easiest to just change: MB, trigger, hammer, sear, disconnector, pistol grip..

Anyway, the only hard part is getting a US company to make 6 parts (though they dont have to be complex parts).

That being said, if I could buy a bare Tavor for ~$2000 today with a couple mags... I would.

Or even better... A parts kit with 922r parts and be able to bend or mill out an 80% receiver...

Time to give up on this paletiger, it is getting rather old!

Right now I REALLY QUESTION why you keep going on this subject, honestly. It just sounds more and more like you're trying to get some idiot to ship a gun to you from up here.. it aint gonna happen. Until someone decides to produce the parts in the US, or you become a citizen up here, then that is the only way you're going to get one.

Sorry, but this is really getting strange.......:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

No no, he's been asking for a few years now and been given the same answers over and over. That is why I question why he keeps it up?

And it isn't just on this forum...

I can get you one... It'll involve a whole lot of welding though. But you'll be the only on the block one with a life-sized Tavor Book-end.

Bracketman, kiss my backside!!! I am looking for LEGAL ways to get a Tavor!!! Dude I own 3 BATFE tax stamps that I took the legal way to get. So I'd appreciate a little respect from you.
Sorry if I'm looking for a LEGAL way to get one while you play Internet cop.

Here's a hint: maybe it's just because he wants a ####ing tavor, and is exploring any ways of getting one. Remember their horse#### laws (922r) are as confusing as our horse#### laws.

What about registering the rifle as an NFA item? I always thought the 922r rules did not apply to NFA registered firearms. Google seems to think so as well.

I just don't know if NFA items can be imported for civi end use. You'd have to talk to BATF.

He seems to really want this gun, whats wrong with that? The way I see it is that if you don't wan't to answer or read his questions don't. Maybe the import regulations have changed, maybe there is a new member with some new knowledge. If anything this post could server as informative to those who didn't know that we in Canada can own many guns that Americans can't or have to jump through hoops to get.
