Situation: Pal of mine was going to go for his PAL/Hunting course, and made a stupid mistake in life.. he's still sorting it out (one to many beers).

He was very disappointed that he can't hunt this fall.. BUT.. as I told him.. you don't need a PAL to hunt.. you can Bow Hunt.. and as long as he's under my immediate and direct control, (and there is only one gun between the 2 of us).. he can gun hunt.

has anyone done this before??? Eg I assume it's the same as hunting with a minor who does not have a PAL.

I THINK but I am not sure that you can have two guns between the two of you as long as you are in arm's reach or whatever.

i was told as long as you are within talking distance and can see them you're good to go. i've never heard of this one gun thing ever, but i don't live in bantario either..

I have always been told that you can each have a gun as long as the pal holder is within arms reach of the barrel or within voice distance (hunting voice and no radios). You have to be in care and control of the gun...it would probably be up to the officer whether or not you were in care and control of the rifle.

Normally you can have 2 guns as long as he's within your "direct control" wich is generally undestand as talking distance.

I have been target shooting sevral time with PAL-less friends, and we had one encounter with le police who confirmed our right to do so.

For hunting he do need a hunting licence wich cannot be shared, I don't know about Ontario, but in Québec you can get a one time only hunting permit if you never hunt before. If he does not have an hunting licence he can accompagny you but without weapons.

However your post suggest that your pal had trouble with the justice. In that case he might be on probation or on bail and this can affect his firearms right, especially if it was a violent crime (I wouldn't be too woried if it's DUI, but if it's assault it might be illegal for him to even touch a firearm or this could reflect negatively on his trial if he's on bail) In anycase he'd be wise to check with his lawyer.

He needs a hunting license.

You're right.

Ontario recognizes two types of resident hunters: gun hunters and non-gun hunters.

•Gun Hunting - The Class H1 Outdoors Card allows hunting with all the methods permitted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act (guns, archery and falconry). To qualify for a H1 Outdoors Card, the applicant must provide proof of passing both the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam and the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam.

•Non-Gun Hunting - The Class H2 Outdoors Card allows hunting with all the methods permitted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act except guns (primarily archery and falconry). To qualify for a H2 Outdoors Card, the applicant must provide proof of passing the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam

There is also this "apprenticeship" deal, but don't know much about it. Still need a license of some sort.

Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Program

Ontario's Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Program offers practical training for new hunters. Under this program hunters can safely develop their hunting skills under the supervision of a qualified Mentor - a licensed and experienced hunter. Two classes of Ontario Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Cards are available - one for gun hunters and one for non-gun hunters.

That's my understanding. He can't be out hunting with you if he doesn't have it.

This is a gray area.... A person can be with you with out a hunting licence as long as the hunter is the only one with the firearm and is hunting. Who said that you need a hunting licence to go hiking or go boony bashing. Who said that since your buddy is coming along and and is going to be taking a firearm with him you are commiting a offence?
As long as the non hunter is not hunting and dose not have a firearm the can go with you for the ride/hike wile their hunting

Assuming the buddy does not have some sort of firearms prohibition order you could try to find a shootable antique. I have an antique rolling block 50/70 that will take any animal in North America and is as accurate as any modern rifle out to 200 yards with open sights,no registration, no Pal, no buddy with a Pal required, just need a valid hunting license.

I do this with a friend. He carries my 1871 Mauser in 43 mauser and was even stopped last season by MNR and OPP. An antique status letter helps though....

I understand that "direct supervision" is only for a person under the age of 18...anyone past that age must hold thier own PAL-Pol to be in possession. And if he is hunting, he must hold his own hunting license.

I am reading it as one too many beers has led to a firearms prohibition. One too many beers doesn't disqualify you from getting your PAL unless you hurt someone or do something silly with a gun. Better stick to one gun for you and a crossbow for him, if ppl here aren't sure you can bet the CO/LEO who shows up isn't going to know any different either.
