I've been spoiled for the last few years in that I have taken all my deer in farmers' fields. After the shot I could go back, get the truck, and drive up to the kill. However, I've recently moved up to northern Alberta and it looks like I will be hunting cut blocks and abandoned oil roads and may end up getting my animal a couple of km into the bush.

Is there an easier way of doing things or just grab the legs an start dragging?

Start dragging.

You can get shoulder-slung tow ropes for the purpose. I suppose you could rig one up for yourself, as well.

Try to shoot the deer on the same side of the fence that the truck is on. Don't ask me how I learned that. :D

if you can figure a way to put that meat on wheels ,so much the better- wsl sells a bicycle wheeled contraption that SAYS it'll haul 275 pounds( don't get the small one) but it'll haul more with different tyres- i've seen it done- that thing really hauls- but that's also extra weight for you to tote- you could also probably hook up a travois if you have your axe with you- trick is to get that weight OFF your body REDUCE the ground friction making your trek lighter

Make yourself a strap system so you can pull with your shoulders. Hook the deer up so it is pulling from the head and make your ropes short enough that when you pull you are pulling the front shoulders of the deer up off the ground a bit. This makes it easier to get over any logs.

Hunt with a buddy, have him pull.... No ATV? Try a sleigh in the winter. Something with wheels when there's no snow. Dragging through the bush sucks. Been there, done that...

I bought a Game Cart for 100 dollars from Bass Pro and had a welder add an additional
16" handle to one end (I am 6'2")
Works like a charm. Folds for transport, large wheels(removable), can handle the weight.

Although you’re not likely to haul it into the bush with you, we’ve been using a plastic toboggan for a few years now. It works well on snow or dry dirt fields, and is a lot easier than just dragging the animal out.

Wheels are good....:)

Yup, works like a charm..

try a rolled up plastic toboggan and some extra rope
you can put extra holes in it at home

in the winter with snow you could also keep a wood toboggan in your car or truck and go get it if you need it

My first reaction was "oh my good you must be pretty drunk if you have to drag it!".

Then I noticed that the title was NOT "Best way to drag beer back to the truck" :D

I've never hunted deer in the south so I don't get it how you pack out your meat, etc. We usually hunt on snowmobile or ATV so packing out the animal is simple, however occasionally I go hunting on foot on Baffin Island with a great friend and we usually cut up the caribou(no deer here) and pack out in a backpack. How does one skin, gut, butcher a deer???

Thanks for all the responses so far. Looks like I'll be putting some rope around it and pulling it back to the truck. I don't have an ATV, but it would likely be the ideal for transport but IIRC you cannot hunt from them as they are considered a motor vehicle under the Wildlife Act.

If there were snow I'd probably just buy the cheapo toboggan from Can Tire. May have to try a crazy carpet on wet grass.
