Well I almost change my mind like the wind when it comes to what Firearm to buy next, however i'm now almost certain that i'll be buying a Rifle chambered in a 6.5x284

Just wondering what the Forum members ,opinions are on this cartridge? any Information would be greatly apprieciated!!! thanks,WJ:wave:

Love mine. I am a 270 fan and a 284 fan as well. Call Clay up and get a Cooper. My Phoenix has a stack of targets with 142 SMK's, 5 shots going 0.29 to 0.35 for 5 shots at 100 yrds. It is THE most accurate out of the box rifle I have ever owned. I used it this summer to shoot some F-Class competitions and didn't finish last! Think of all the moose that have fallen to the 6.5x55 and put that on steroids.

Ballistically it is the same as the 6.5 Rem Mag and 6.5-06 but the short fat case concept. Make sure you get one with the 6.5-284 Norma stamp. Some of the early ones and wild cat reamers kicking around are short throat. And put it in a long action.

If you like a 270, you will love this round. As a side note, this round has sparked some new interest in the original 284 and I see guys building some nice guns on both these great rounds.

As a matter of fact I do like the .277 cal,I got a 270win,270wsm & a 270 Wby Mag (lol).

Are all the cooper rifles stamped 6.5 x 284 Norma? if not is that still exactly what cartridge they are in the cooper rifles like your's?

Mine was one of the very early ones purchased on the advice of our late friend Ian McMurchy. It has the short throat. It is my understanding that now that is has been "Standardized" by Europe's equivalent of SAAMI (which I believe is called CIP) and has the Norma name attached, Cooper now uses that reamer. A quick call to Clay at Prophet River will confirm that.

I looked at that round an the 6.5-06 when i started my build, I ultimately decided to have Brian at accurate action screw an RKS barrel on a remington long action, and had him cut an '06 chamber. It is still a work in progress, but i love the round and will hopefully use the rifle to drop a non-trophy 'loper in 2 weeks.

I am building one as we speak. I however am not as concerned about pushing it ballistically so I am building it on a sako a11. Piece of new zealand walnut from Clay and away I go.

I know very little about the cartridge however and have been inquiring as to loads. This gun racket is awsome - so little guns so little time.

Good luck with your build or buy.

Funny, because I was just talkin to my dad today about a 6.5-06 he use to have and his first kill with it was a Female antelope.it had a Hart Barrel on it and the rifle was built by Hart himself.

He met a guy that liked the rifle so much, that my dad sold it too him.

Well I like the sounds of your 6.5 x 284 Build, that will be a great Rifle when its done, you'll have to share some pics on here.Gotta Love them wood stocks!

I have been thinking of going cooper all along.however i'd want a 26" Barrel instead of a 24".The cooper Model 52 in a custom classic Rifle is what i'm leaning towards.:D

I'm getting really confused here, guys; kindly forgive me.

Fred Jensen in Melita, Manitoba, had reamers for the 6.5/.284W actually produced, in his shop and in use before .284 ammo hit the hardware stores. Fred was Danish-Canadian and utterly hated anything Swedish; for Norma to put their name on what he regarded as HIS cartridge would have been a terrible blow. Fred would have seen it as just one more manifestation of "the slimy Swede"; he never did forgive them for April 9, 1940.

Some of you guys might have liked Fred, provided that you didn't kill each other. He was irascible and crotchety at the best of times and got even more opinionated as he progressed through most of his 90s. The only problem was that Fred could always PROVE that he was right. He was an absolute perfectionist and he built some of the most accurate hunting rifles ever put together in Western Canada. Some folks still miss him.

Anyway, I prefer to think of that cartridge as the 6.5 Jensen.

And anoher old development is the original 6.5/'06:the fabled .256 Newton which was chambered in that incredible Buffalo Newton rifle. The .256 was the only one of Charles Newton's cartridges which could be made from existing brass. In 1912 it was a real hot-rock. Newton and Sir Charles Ross were friends and Newton's wonderful rifle was basically a '98 Mauser action but it had a Mark III Ross type of bolt-head: 7 lugs arranged 4 on the left, 3 on the right. And it also had a Ross ejector and so got away from the split lefthand lug of the Mauser series. Winchester later stole this ejector from the Newton, put it on a modified P-17 action (which is pure Mauser for the most part) and the Winchester Models 54 and 70 were born, one following the other.

Might be fun to build up a new .256 Newton, just to remember the guy who started it all.

norma just has a longer neck?

The 6.5 x 284 Norma has a longer throat cut into the chamber to accomadate the longer 140 grain bullets,is what ive been told(Father).

Savage and Cooper are the only Firearm companys that chamber the 6.5 x 284 in a Factory Rifle. However savage I believe only chambers it in a short action, and i'm almost 99% sure that cooper chambers it in a long action, but i'll have to find that out.

For me,when I buy a 6.5 x 284 cooper rifle, it will have to have a long action and have at least have a 26" Barrel so I can at least cut it back once,if or probably when I wash out the chamber.:D

Hey Junkie I am sure you have already been on Clays site looking at coopers but the custom classic in model 22 is spectacular. I am fortunate enough to live in Lloyd and have held that rifle. The wood is way better than the photos show. That is what got me all rammy on the 6.5-284. You are on the right track with the coopers for sure.

Clay is having a grand opening at his retail spot at the end of October and the cooper reps will be there. May be a good time to check em out.

I know exactly what rifle you are talking about,it's the one with the NZ wood!!!!

I'd buy that Rifle Today,except for one small thing....It's a single shot,not a repeater.i'm more a hunter than I am a target shooter.however I guess the 6.5 x 284 cooper repeater rifles are in the Mail:D

My dad has a Cooper classic in a 280AI,two weeks ago I watched him shoot 3 shots at 200yards in a 0.720" Group.being deer hunter's we are proud of that.

Well good luck with the rifle. Post pics when it arrives as I can always find time to look at a cooper. Living this close to Clay is a costly endeavor and I can see a cooper in my future. I guess there are worse problems to have!

Just knowing Clay can be costly,So far,it has cost me five Coopers,a Citori,a Sako 85,a S&W 41,several scopes,and some reloading gear.:D

Well Stubblejumper I haven't know him that long and I suspect as time goes on I will grow my collection to look more like yours. He makes it so easy and the quality of stuff speaks for itself. At the risk of high jacking junkies thread is one of your coopers a 6.5-284?

No 6.5x284 rifle yet.To date I have owned two 17Mach2 Coopers,one 22lr Cooper,and two 280AI Coopers.My first 17Mach2 was a Classic,but I sold it replace it with a Jackson Hunter,to match my other Coopers.
