So im relatively new here to CGN. Its a great site with great members who really know their stuff! I have been browsing the Exchange forums for a few weeks now looking for a decent over and under shotgun.

there are many models out there ranging form low end to super expensive!

One I was interested was a TOZ but locally here in newfoundland its near impossible to find parts. Another one i was looking at was the Mossberg Silver Reserve.

After reading threads about issues with the firing pins, i was becoming sceptical about buying. I dont shoot trap, never have. Id be using the shotgun primarily for hunting rabbits, grouse, maybe ducks and tarmigan. If i put 50 rounds through it a year, it would be the most. I dont get to hunt a lot unfortunately.

I made a call to Mossberg this morning and asked about the firing pin issue. I was informed that all new mossberg silver reserve models have the firing pin issue resolved with new parts and new material. Was this the biggest issue with this shotgun.

I know, there are brownings out there, and many more superior firearms. im on a tight budget, and dont have a thousand dollars to throw at a shotgun right now, or in the future.

thanks guys

How about a CZ Canvasback or something? I wasn't overly impressed with the Mossberg stuff when I handled it. Stoeger is another option but I've not handled them myself.

whats a shotgun like that worth and where could i pick one up? locally i dont think anyone carries them, which poses a service issue for me. a local company carries and services the mossberg.

it is a great looking gun tho. have you used it or do you own one?

Hello jp123,

Welcome!

Out of curiosity, how imperative is it for you to acquire an O/U shotgun only? Have you considered any SxS (side by side) models too?

What gauge - 12 or 20? What budget range, roughly, did you have in mind?

Based on the type of usage that you've outlined....the Mossberg should serve well provided the shogun fits you well. A friend of mine has owned one in 12ga and has been using that for trap (albeit irregularly) over the past couple years.....no trouble so far. However, the firearm is heavy and the fit and finish leaves much to be desired. Having said that it is still a quite acceptable firearm in its price range.

Since you mentioned TOZ - suggest look at the Baikal O/U (model IZH-27) or even SxS (IZH-43) as those are robust shotguns. The modern ones are equipped to handle 2 3/4in as well as 3in cartrdiges including steel shells. Refer to the site here .... http://ellwoodepps.com/firearms_new_baikal_1.htm

Ellwood Epps (in ON) had a new CZ Mallard O/U shotgun for $500+tax - I believe that would also work very well. Moreover, the CZ shotguns (also made in Turkey) are much better finished overall and come with a 5-year warranty. Besides, that particular model comes with double triggers and with shotguns built/offered at lower price points - the CZ Mallard will be less prone to mechanical troubles..... for details on the firearm please refer to - www.cz-usa.com

Well even if you only get out a couple times a year, I'd look for a good quality gun, and not the Mossberg etc. The Mossberg O/U is actually a Turkish Khan, rebranded for sale in North America. I've only read about them online, but in fairness things sound modestly favourable.

A used Browning Citori, though not my favorite, is very reasonably priced and it's much more gun than a Mossberg branded O/U. Same for a Ruger Red Label. I'd hunt for one of these two guns used first.

Im looking for something in the 5-600 dollar range. I always wanted an over and under...i think they are the nicest looking guns out there!

as much as i know the citori is a better gun, as are many more, its not in the budget. i dont like to buy used as i find often, people selling guns, are selling for a reason...and not all the time due to lack of safe space. i dont normally shoot steel, might have shot one box of steel shells in 15 years of hunting. it will be al lead down the pipe for sure.

i greatly appreciate the responses

Have a look at the tradex site they have used O/U at fair prices.I like you wanted a o/u and just could not fit a browning or the like into my budget .after doing some research i bought a yildiz .there made in turkey like the huglo and the cz canvasback.Uk shooting and shooting times gave it a good review.now I will be the first to admitt its no browning but for the couple hundred rounds a year I will put through it .i think it will suffice.I have read on shotgun world of guys with 3000 plus rounds through there Y guns with out a moments trouble.

I bought a used Lanber Deluxe 12g 3" for $400 used from WSS. The gun function flawless and out shoots many far more expensive guns. My friend has a very nice Cesar G. and the construction is almost identical.

Alittle heavy but it points and swings like a champ.

I think Tradex has a few Lanbers forsale for cheap. Would not hesitate to buy another.

B.

If you don't buy used you are really really missing out on some of the best guns ever made.

The Trader Rating is here for a reason, guys generally are not out to rip you off....these guys are legit "GUN NUTZ"....they love guns....they buy/sell/trade and enjoy doing so.

One day you may want to sell a gun, it likely won't be junk that you are looking to dump. Sometimes you lose interest, maybe you upgrade, sometimes you find something that fits you better, other times the romance wears off...or maybe you simply need the cash.

Please consider getting into the used gun market, an older O/U is one of the safest used gun purchases around......the cheaper new stuff is trash.

definately this thread has put a spin on what i feel i should do. ill have a look in the exchange forum and see whats available there, and ill also have a closer look on trade ex.

are there other online gun sales that are reputable as well?

btw...what does SPF mean in the exchange forum?

regards

Sold Pending Funds....(I asked the same question too :) )

Just take a look at the seller's trader rating, and you can't go wrong (it's the little number to the left by our avatars). Buy from reputable seller's, and all's swell you'll end up with a great gun. Or, buy from new sellers, but get lots of photos, and name / address / phone number. Best to confirm the phone number with a chat about the gun.

Here's a good deal on a Citori, that you could likely make an offer on:

I bought a new savage stevens O/U comes with 5 chokes shot it for the entire trapp season no problems . Cost was $700.00 Better quality I think than the mossberg. Also look at Baikal Canada .

i went on the trade ex website and sent off an email about a few of the baikal and feg model o/u's. whats everyones thoughts on those? are they made with quality? how hard are they on parts? common issues?

DEZ...is it the 512 gold wing you bought? if so...the gold partridge on the side, is it a sticker or etched into the reciever?
