Does anyone out there use there CZ 858 Non Restricted rifle for hunting Deer? How does it do? It seems like everyone believes its a light fairly accurate rifle, like a Mini 30 and that is used by alot of people for deer, so it only makes sense that a CZ is used also.

Is the Folding stock better or worse for carrying, and shooting (when open) than the wooden stock while out in the bush?

How does the regular finish stand up hunting conditions? Alot of people seem to really badmouth the factory metal.

Yup it shouldn't be a problem, the only thing is that I personally haven't seen any hollow point 7.62x39mm?? I don't know if Prvi Partizan makes them.. I know they make the better and non-corrosive ones, but this cartridge is considered a military cartridge rather than a hunting one. a 7.62x39 hollow point sounds like a war crime lol

I have friends that use Prvi Partizan 7.62x39 Soft point ammunition in there Mini 30's and they have dropped probably over a dozen deer between a few of them over the years. They all say that its pretty much the equivilant to using a semi auto 30-30.

So I know that the 7.62x39 is a excellent Deer Cartridge, I was just wondering more about the CZ 858 (with a 5 round magazine )in the bush.

Prvi ammo should be easy to find, a lot of guys seem to like it.

I have been working up my own loads, and have shot a couple of sub 2moa, 3 shot groups with hornady v-max's(might not be the best bullet for deer though).

As Deck said, check the faq thread, there are a couple of '58 kills posted on there.

The finish(and furniture) is super durable(just not taktikool enough for some...).

My 858 is the gun I will take out in any weather, and yes, i'd recommend getting a shortened mag for it.

As for the folding stock, I can't see any use in carrying it folded while hunting, I have a hard time working that release button to open her up, it is super stiff on my tac-4v. When open, it is very solid, but hard to get a good cheek weld.

Having said that, i will probably put the folder on my tac-2(non res) for the winter, so she'll be easier to pack on a dogsled... Har!!!:pirate: no, I meant gee!

Wolf makes hollow point 7.62x39. I have a case of it.
Sorry to hijack the thread....I don't understand your comment on this cartridge being a military cartridge????? The 308 Win, 30-06, 303 British, etc are all common hunting rounds and are all military cartridges. Loaded with soft points, they are used for almost all North American game. The 7.62x39 is no different.
Been hunting with it for 4 years (mini-thirty S/S). 4 dead deer later, I am 100 percent confident it will kill my next deer.

Getting back to the original thread....You can dress up the 858 with all kinds of gadgets and stocks...but in my opinion, its still a pig no matter how you dress it. I like it with the AR style collapsable stock. The wooden stock is frugly. (Wood used to be good for hockey sticks and hammer handles but we got smarter....wish the same would go with hunting rifles. lol)
I had a SKS with collapsable stock that buckled everytime I fired it. what a pain in the a55.

I think once you get over the novelty of a folding stock....(ooohs and ahhs) the practicality of it hunting is limited.

Friend of mine has the collapsable stock, red dot and tactical light mounted and it looks sweet. I'ld use it for deer, (less the light lol)) in a heartbeat.

Buy Buy Buy!!

Wood is still good for hammer handles, (as long as the "tool" is "sharp" on one end of it:p) but not the kind of "wood" you'll find on a '58...;)

The gunsmith at Epps was pretty amused by all the guys who want "real" wood for their '58s but NEED to have a synthetic stock on their chinese M-14s.(well, as Hungry tells us, we all know what could happen...)

Blah, wood and steel go together like PB&J

 If it came in wood, leave it in wood! (some exceptions) In my experiences, most folding stocks compromise a little. I only like them for fitting in tighter spaces for transport (quad, toyota trucks:cool:) good if you need a shorter gun, not good if its folded, on your shoulder when a deer appears 30 yds away. Usually a good cheek weld goes out the window, or its loose, or just doesnt fit right.

I actually like the wood that came from the factory. Is there anywere that sells nice wood stocks for them? All I have ever scene is some cheesy plastic stocks that really don't suit it. The best plastic stock I have ever scene is the skeleton stock, but the CZ just does'nt look good with rails, although it is practical.

i have not shot anything with mine but i ahve packed it with me hunting i find it pretty light and i like the folding stock on it

I am surprised that more guys don't use it for Deer season, for pushing the bush or just carrying, while walking around because its so light and maneuverable, if you pop in a 5 round mag.

I have gotten 2 big fat does with my 858 w/folder this season. It's compactness and light weight makes it ideal for the dense bush north of Cold Lake. If I was hunting in wide open spaces I would opt for my Mosin M91, but as a mid-range bush gun it can't be beat! Plus it has the benefit of pissing off every crusty Fudd that sees it, especially at the range.

My 858 folder screw always used to rattle loose after 50 rnds or so, but some blue Loctite fixed that. I found no change in accuracy between a fixed and folder

I would take a CZ858 for hunting deer in a heartbeat. Specifically in cleared sections of wooded areas (known as slash areas) where your shots will be between 50-100 yards maximum in most cases. In these cases I think it would be a fantastic choice. While not a fan of the folders, I would go with a shortened mag to avoid snagging on stuff.
