I voted .40s(hort)&w(eak) since it was created from the 10mm Auto which was too powerful to be used and had to be downgraded :D

I'm all about the biggest bang in smallest package.

2-3/4" .500/.460 S&W for the win! :)

I'd vote 9mm for just punching paper because if you dont' reload it's usually cheaper than .40 S&W to buy and if you do reload might even have a slight advantage on cost there, too.

However, given the difference, in ctgs if it was a SHTF scenario and I could only pick one handgun I'd go with what I know best: Glock 22 .40 S&W stoked with Speer 180 gr Gold Dots.

So, in this poll I vote .40 S&W.

Bottom line, if it's punching paper or otherwise, it's still shot placement that trumps cartridge every time, though.

Since all rounds are deadly, including the lowly .22lr the issue will never go away and will be classed "argumentum ad nauseam" This is wonderful news for the gun makers and ammunition plants, because it assures people will buy new products.

357 sig.. So you get the best of both worlds...

But since it's not an option and the poll is pretty stupid since it doesn't say for what, loaded how and since I don't think ammo is a beauty contest I really can't answer it..
 
Only Girly Men and Europeans shoot a 9mm.:p

In Canada, where finding fancy hollow point cartridges is almost impossible, you want something that works even in a FMJ.

A 9mm may expand, but a .45 will never shrink.:D

Out of sheer simplicity I sold my 357, and 40 pistols and have decided to stick with 9mm and 45acp.

I think 40 is great and 357 is golden... it just had to be done...
 
Better round? Simple answer is .40, but the 9 is not far behind.

That is based on my personal circumstances and preferences:

Maximum mag capacity for both 9 and 40 double stackers is 10rds.
For semi-autos, I prefer calibers that start with a 4 for two obvious reasons, power factor and big bullets do not need to expand.
I reload and cast my own bullets.
40 and 9 brass are free for the pick up at my club.
Accuracy is about the same.

If .45 acp was among the choices, that would've been mine.
